Our political "leaders", I use that term with no endearment at all, are a disgrace to our military personnel and most Americans. While the politician and their family's continue to get paid and receive the best of care money can buy. The men and woman defending this right and privilege might go without. If they allow our government to shut down. Have they no shame.... Back to driving for the DAV. Looks like they might need the help. God Bless our soldier!

I thought the House passed in their Bill that the military would be funded through the fiscal year, which i believe ends September, that the troops will be paid, and I am sure what ever passes , if it does, the senate will be going along with that too. Now there might be some offices closed that a military person might have to wait to open, example food stamps iof applying and other social services they might be eligible for but as far as i know the troops were exempt from the no pay. Actually , if like the last time, they may vote to make sutre all public employees get their back pay, congress deciding that one.

Good Stuff Jarhead1976 and a lot of military families were worried sick about not getting their pay checks. They were informed by the Pentagon that they would get paid but not sure when if we saw a government shutdown...if that is not a morale buster than pls tell me what is it?? BTW I like your moniker and too bad we have some here who don't..

Off Topic but this got me to wondering: Where does the term come from? The Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jarhead) has three suggestions. Thoughts?

My dad was in the Navy and his brother in the Marines. My dad told me he called his brother "jarhead" because that's what the sailors called marines during WWII. He said it was because the collars of their uniforms came up high and fastened with leather fasteners resembling the leather sealers used on Mason jars of that time. That, coupled with the "high and tight" haircut made them resemble upside down Mason jars, according to my father. Whether this is true, or not, I have no clue. Those two called each other names the meaning of which I didn't even want to KNOW, but they loved each other dearly.

I'm glad I read some of the post first on this thread...I happened to read the title at a bad time. A Vietnam veteran was telling me how he and in his words "a lot of Vietnam Vets don't feel that today's troops are real veterans." His logic was because we've never faced a military that was as well trained as he was back in his day.

I was told by a lot of WW2 Veterans that at least they never lost a war like we did...so there is always some back and forth by veterans and much of it is just nonsense.. I think todays troopers are awesome and having to deal with head injuries and several tours that my generation never had to deal with..

Original post was in response to the possibility of the Government shutting down. Leaving many young families without the support they need while there spouse is over seas. What will happen to our men serving and retirees if the debt ceiling will not be lifted?

What will happen to our men serving and retirees if the debt ceiling will not be lifted? It would be a concern, however, until it is proven out, it seems both sides of the aisle appreciate that while all are equal, some are a bit more equal and deserving and doing things above and beyond in protecting our country and so far , and I believe in the future , will be so rewarded and so treated. If it changes, well then the out cry by the majority of the populace will be heard I believe.
