And... my other tale from the cheap food chronicles....
so - I made some pea soup the other day. And the peas did not disintegrate. I soaked for over 24 hours, then preboiled the peas separately for 30 minutes as I prepared the rest of the soup....I usually just toss the soaked peas into the sauteing onions and celery, continue sauteing for a few minutes, and add water and bring to a simmer while I prep the potatoes and carrots. But I was pretty hungry and wanted to get the peas to thick fog status asap.
After 2 hours - they were not in the least bit crumbling, but cooked enough, and I could wait no more and had dinner. I figured they would fall apart at any moment - cuz - well soaked and 2 hours of simmering - and put the pot on the back of the stove over night.
I came home for lunch the next day intending to work from home for the afternoon. Still - no evidence of crumbling. I simmered them another hour and gave up and ate, but left the fire on.....and 3 hours later (!! I was checking periodically !!) they were at least starting to show cracks. I thought maybe some were melting - but then I realized that the potato and carrot pieces were getting smaller - and that is why the broth was likely clouding. I finished it off for dinner.
6 hours people! Have you ever heard of such a thing!! I'm tyring to save money here, people! At least it is winter so the heat was welcomed, otherwise - I'd wonder how much spent on the gas....
I had only used half that bag - so now I am timing it. Soaked for 24 hours, and started to simmer at 10:00 a.m......no soup prep until they are disintegrated!!
I mean - when you can't trust a bag of peas, what can you trust?

I have some black beans that are old, when they get old they take forever to get soft. I cooked a pot all day and still hard so put them in my instant pot for 40 minutes. That's quite a time to cook in that thing and finally got them soft. Yep, old beans are like that so maybe old peas are too.

Dang, I haven't made pea soup in many years. You have made me wanting some, but you have also discouraged me

Glad I read this. I was planning to make pea soup tomorrow with the lefover ham bone from Christmas (it’s been frozen). The pkg of peas I have is old. Wondering whether to toss it or use it and plan for a longer time. I hate throwing food out.

3 hours - and still holding strong! they are at least looking a little crumbly. I have them at more of a gently boiling than the usual simmer I do with soups. I have never experienced this before. Usually make pea soup about once a week to twice a month in winter. Internet lore is about 30 minutes for fresh, 90 minutes for the "old" ones....I have on occasion had them take about 2 hours. What the hell are these? From medieval times?

4 and a half hours and not there yet!!
I was convinced that somehow I had some crazed magical salt ratio or something, but it is the peas now only in water and same deal....
they are starting to break down, but seems like they are disappearing as the broth is not thickening, just smaller and fewer pea pieces......
well, will see when they finish....edging into 5 hours....
do I blame the brand - or the retailer for very old peas?

This is a dumb question, but are they split peas? I make a lot of split pea and ham soup. The ones that come in "netting" cook a lot faster than the ones that come in boxes or loose from the health food store. I usually count 3h for them. But I'm not sure if yours are "split peas" or not ... In any case, enjoy your soup! LOL

6 hours and 10 minutes!!! Almost !!!! will prepare the soup! Did you buy one of those Jim Bakker Apocalypse Chow buckets and those peas were part of the purchase? The food included in the bucket can survive intact the released energy of multiple nuclear bombs.

But funnily enough....my usual scifi show was getting a little off track and intense...so I just wanted to watch a little comedy .... ended up with doomsday preppers!

Maybe the store you bought the peas from got a good deal on some salvaged/old peas?
When my father died, we through his food storage and found some cans of crab meat, with no date. My sister contacted the manufacturer, who told her the cans were too old- do not eat them. So they were thrown out.
Since dates have been put on all foods for some time now, I always associate any food items without a date, as being old.

I think I would pitch them and buy some fresher. Now I have about 8 pounds of black beans left out of 10, so need to cook more of them.
Brrrr, I'm sitting here feeling cold, just drank some sparkling grape juice chilled, so didn't make me any warmer.

In case the retailer is pulling shenanigans. If I don't get a good response - I'll know that it is the brand and then I won't buy them again.

I'm not a prepper - these were purchased within the past month.

Best way to find out if the pea brand is all bad or that the one time of indestructable peas was just an anomoly is to buy another bag and test it.

This thread made me happy that I had frozen split pea soup leftovers from last month. I had it for dinner!
