so - been trying to reign in the grocery budget after being a bit too free wheeling with food during the holidays - and subsequently getting hit with unexpected medical bills this month - because I switched to the HDHP - of course. So - when trying to save on groceries, a bag of lentils is pretty cheap and does several meals. I usually do a dahl for dinner several times a month and up to 2x per week. depending on how many lentils are available (end of bag, etc.) and time/energy concerns - I may add carrots and/or potatoes. Last night - there was an old sweet potato lying around and single smallish parsnip that didn't get rolled into the holiday stuff, and they weren't getting any younger, so in they went - and they looked just like the usual carrot and potato edition, but it tasted decidedly different....and I didn't tell anyone beforehand

Yeah, if you don't tell me the sweet potato would be a problem. I try not to surprise people with unknown ingredients. Parsnips are basically just sweeter carrots though, little more earthy.

I had to look up dahl because I didn't know what it is. I thought when you said you were trying to save money on groceries you were serving what I call "scrounge." Whatever I find in the fridge or freezer is served as either a soup or a casserole. No two ever alike.
