There is a lot of healthy space between dying of anorexia and being fat.

Just looked at the article. Thirteen to Twenty-eight is a long time to be anorexic. RIP.

It sure is sad what some people do to themselves, and why they did it.

How sad. I can't imagine the pain of being hungry and not feeding yourself. And who in the world would hire a model that looks like that? That makes no sense to me at all. It's not attractive and I can't imagine anything on her looking good when all you can see are her protruding bones.

Some of those models are way below just being 'skinny'.

It is so sad that our culture is so "thin obsessed". It would be so much better if models were not so thin. Young ladies get a distorted idea of what is really "normal".
I was REALLY thin when I was younger and absolutely hated it. I didn't want to be fat - I just wanted to look "normal". Now I realize that it was all genetic and not too much that I could have done about it.

Approximating ideal body weight[plus/minus~10 percent] Women 100 lbs for first 5 feet then 5lbs for each additional inch over 5 feet example 5'5" - 100 plus 25lbs ..125lbs
Men 106 lbs for first 5 feet then 6 lbs for each additional inch over 5 feet. example 5'7" 106 plus 42lbs....148lbs
Many people who weigh over their number try to use the 'but I have more muscle mass' argument.... which they usually don't have.

There is something to be said about being fat...
It can stop a bullet from hitting vital organs.

Depending on how a fall occurs... fat can be a padding to prevent a fracture but on the other hand the weight of the fat can contribute to a fracture.

Try this
What I do to estimate body weight
I use the formula as a base number
If the person seems small in size[and you don't see their ribs] = formula size
If the person seems-medium in size- I add 40 to 50 lbs
If they seem large - I add 100+ lbs

I mean, sunken-in cheekbones, and protruding collarbones. my dr actually told me to put on a few pounds.

I like the way my face looks when I am 105. I spent most of my life at that or below that. No I do not have an eating disorder. I am just a very tiny person. Everything about me is tiny....well except for my booty. I have always had a booty.
BUT at 105 I have NO boobs! NONE!!!! Zilch! NADA!
I would like to lose a little bit of weight, but I don't ever want to get to 105 again. I think 115 would be a good weight for me.

So I should weigh 120 pounds??! I'm not seeing that happening. When I was on the swim team in college, swimming 2 hours a day, plus lifting and other dryland training, I weighed about 140. I thought I looked pretty good, but I didnt' have any boobs........

Swamp, I agree, even when I was training full time in college I didn't weigh 95 pounds, and I looked damn good at 110.

The folks that regularly work out may carry more muscle mass and they know when they are wearing too many inches of fat.
Jan- are you less than 5 ft? The formula starts at 100 lbs for the first 5ft.

It's a shame some women starve themselves like the model, did. Very, very sad. However, most people have the opposite problem. It's funny that "thin" is the ideal beauty but 70% of people are overweight and 50% are obese (or something like that). I once listed myself as "average" as in neither fat nor thin - but the average size for a woman is a 14 now (I think?). And of course, a size 14 in 2010 is a size 20 from 1965....
As a society we need to do a better job of promoting health and fitness and not "thinness." One good thing that is happening in 2012 is that all cuts of meat are going to be required to have calorie and fat content on them, just like a box a cereal. Granted, most Americans don't know how to read the labels and understand what it means, but it could help SOME people.

I think you should have used the word Healthy instead of fat. There is something to be said about being Healthy.
It is sad on both ends of the spectrum - someone who won't eat and someone who eats themselves to death. End result the same. Sad but true.

I was shopping at an 'Asian' market and noticed that not only the shoppers were trimmer compared to those of like Walmart , but also the beef cuts had less fat and were of smaller portions. This market had a wide variety of fish not in the mainstream American grocery stores.
