I've been trying to buy a bottle of plain old Karo corn syrup, but I'm having trouble finding it. The stores around me now carry it with vanilla already in it. I don't want vanilla-flavored corn syrup, I want plain corn syrup.
Am I perhaps delusional and corn syrup has always had vanilla in it?

No, it is still possible to purchase corn syrup without flavoring. I've actually never seen flavored Karo. The major grocery stores I usually frequent actually have their own store brand corn syrup in addition to Karo, all unflavored.
Have you asked someone at the store whether they're just out of the plain kind? It seems very odd that they wouldn't have the plain kind.

That one particular store could be out off plain Karo syrup what with all the baking (pecan pie) for Christmas day.

I know nothing about it having vanilla in it. If you'd like, I can take a look at my Market Basket tomorrow and let you know if they have it. How many bottles do you need?

Walmart probably has regular Karo. If you have a Super Target with a full grocery store, they might have it.

I'm still trying to get over the idea of vanilla flavored whiskey - please don't tell me they have screwed up corn syrup I don't use it because I don't bake, but that's just flat out wrong!

From what I could tell when I was at the store today, there is a red label Karo and a blue label. The red label one has the vanilla in it. The blue is most likely the plain. Unfortunately, I don't actually know because all they had left were 4 bottles of the red. Sorry!

Karo Light Corn Syrup has vanilla in it. Always has. Karo Dark Corn Syrup does not contain vanilla. Appears that making light corn syrup removes something that provides flavor, so Karo adds vanilla to enhance the flavor.
You might be able to find other brands of corn syrup that don’t have vanilla.

Seems just plain wrong to do so, but I checked 3 more stores today to no avail. Plenty of vanilla flavored corn syrup, but no plain. So, I broke down and ordered some from Amazon. I guess the grocery stores will be the next brick and mortars to disappear from the face of the earth. The failure to stock plain corn syrup is just the first nail in the grocery store coffin. 😕

Amazon won't deliver in time.

I did notice my local stored were all out of sandwich buns.

They stopped carrying my 3 favorite cereals. Amongst other things.

I think it may have always had vanilla in it, it just didn't say it on the label. I noticed my local grocery store had Karo syrup advertising it had vanilla in it. I wonder if the required reporting threshold dropped below 2% of contents for labels, or they just decided to let us know vanilla was in it?

I'm looking at my bottle of Karo light corn syrup and it says 'made with REAL vanilla'. Guess I've never paid that much attention.
I make a chocolate ice cream syrup at Hanukkah for some friends. I've made this for many years and no one has said anything about a different flavor.
Maybe it's always been there and I didn't notice.

I checked my pantry. Kroger store brand doesn’t say vanilla, but last ingredient is “natural flavorings” which could be vanilla.
If you are at the store during peak shopping season and see only vanilla on shelf, that would mean that the non- vanilla was more popular and sold out. They just need to adjust their stock.
Don’t most recipes that use corn syrup also contain vanilla?

I can only imagine how those two items would have come out if used together.

I can only imagine how those two items would have come out if used together. As kids, we used to make rock candy which was basically letting sugar and water crystallize on string. Those hard, mini marshmallows you had probably would have made a good coating for the rock candy. And about throwing away the old Karo syrup - that kitchen cabinet is in for a good cleaning out. There is no more room for herb an spice containers and the like in it. Many duplicates of the same too. Time to throw out the older ones and leave the new ones in there. Same goes for the cabinets which have baking pans, storage containers, and the like. No room in there too and probably 90% of the stuff in the cabinets haven't been used in years. 2020 project-throw out the crap!

I need to go through my cabinets too. I know I need some new baking pans. I am currently fan-girling over Cuisinart nonstick baking pans. Absolutely nothing sticks to them. Nothing. Actually, it seems that most of the new generation of nonstick baking pans are pretty good at the whole nonstick thing. I just like the Cuisinart ones because they're a pretty goldish color.
