"Clean-up month", lol, I like that, plugginaway22 I'm thankful the next big bill due from sinking funds (after the March insurance payments) won't be until October. resolution , I'm feeling the same way about the checking being too uncomfortably low. I started out planning to put $2k into the sinking fund. I keep a cashflow spreadsheet in Excel that has all income/expenditures and a running total of the impact on my checking account. Those cells turn varying shades of red when the balance drops below certain thresholds. I was seeing way too much red in my future, so I dropped the savings transfer to $1600. flamingo, it seems that NOT moving backwards is excellent progress for January! Seriously, it's great you didn't have to dip into savings and you've set yourself up for a good February. I'm pretty sure I've got some $0 non-retirement savings months in my future. When I upped my 403b/457b to $3k/month back in November, I did the math to figure the $ change to my paycheck, and knew it was going to be tough. However, I didn't calculate the change in % net income until recently. I'm now bringing home just 37% of my gross pay. Somehow, that number is scarier/more discouraging than the actual dollar amount. I vote we change the "F" in TGIF to stand for February!

I totally understand the struggle with Jan but mine is due mostly to all the money spent remodeling my house. I am loving it more and more and wish I had been able to do all of this along time ago. Hope when I sell it, they love it as much as I do!! Teachermom

Up to two now. I have another update to do in a week. I think I will add a chunk of money to the Travel fund. I can't top it off and get another rose, but I can get to maybe 75% of that goal. I've got my taxes almost figured out now, just have to go through my charitable donations and get them added in. Looks like I planned pretty well, will be getting back maybe $500 each from state and federal. Into the savings they will go.

Savers,
I understand we may have a fair number of football fans here, or maybe just Super Bowl party fans, so let's hold off on the first smilies of 2020 for a few days. (If you are betting on the outcome, you will need a day or two to deposit your winnings into Savings.)
Please get your updates posted no later than Tuesday afternoon, February 4. I'll do the smilies that evening.
Thank you!

My goal is to save $1000/month in 2020. Saved $831 in January, and considering everything, am thrilled with this. We also now have a truck payment which lowers the amount of cash in account, ha-ha.
Got an estimate of $1200 to replace our very old gas log fireplace set-up. That will probably be next expense, but want to get another quote. We also have some rotting porch posts that need attention. Always something with an older home!

Still just limping along for now. 401k is at the level just to get the match. I'm not sure that I should even bother with that circumspection as I doubt I'll make it in this job to vesting. I transferred over 500 to cover ~200 shortfall when the student loan goes through this much. Although I'm much more confident about my projections these days - still don't like to cut it too close... March student loan payments will produce a shortfall I can't cover - so that is a pickle. I likely could if I did 401k to 0, but I have some time to figure it out. It is only for 24 hours that I need some extra cash - and then my projections are everything is fine through end of June when my projections end. But on June 30th I have enough for July without any of July paychecks, So - in good shape once I get through all the payments first week of March. This does not count RI income, but leaves 401k at minimum to get the match. As soon as I pay March student loans I will up the 401k. I could submit the medical expenses to the HSA or get a 24 hour loan from someone. I'll wait to decide how to handle this until mid-february, and keep the 401k at a level to get the match - in case I end up at same job till the end of 2021......but just writing that is depressing!

Finnime2 $1000 2/1/2020 (Goal 18,500) Well, that was unexpected. I agree with the above, TGIF (Thank God It's February). Spent $740 on house repairs, including new wiring in the kitchen and a couple of other odd projects, plus $260 to help out DD. I intended for the money to be split so that I could beef up EF savings to keep, as well, but the universe laughed. The wiring in the kitchen was essential--hadn't been updated since the house was built in 1945, and the new overhead fixture couldn't be installed without the new wiring. Old wiring was a fire hazard. Prior owner had apparently discovered the crumbling insulation when he installed a light and instead of doing the right thing used electrical tape to cover the wires. That got brittle and was falling off leaving exposed live wiring crossing the neutral wire. Good to have found it. Next house project is replacing front portico columns. They're rotting from the bottom. I see Lowe's has them for about $100 each, pine, so I just need to cost out the installation. I'll paint the whole thing once it's done. After that, I'll need to strip and paint front windows exterior or hire it out. Plus hire some labor to cut out the runaway grape and trumpet vines in the back, and hire a mason to repoint the bricks in the walkway and stairs. We will owe something in taxes. I don't want to think about it yet. It's going to be a tight 2020.

today's card was chosen by a cruise acquaintance. I had decluttered some swag from past trips by mailing them to other cruisers. one was nice enough to send me a card with half the postage included. so I added that $5 to the jar with the 5 of spades. this year seems easy so far, here's to keeping it up all year! Card | Spades (1x) | Diamonds (2x) | Hearts (3x) | Clubs (4x) | A | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 3 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 12 | 4 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 16 | 5 | | 10 | 15 | 20 | 6 | 6 | 12 | 18 | 24 | 7 | 7 | 14 | 21 | 28 | 8 | 8 | 16 | 24 | 32 | 9 | 9 | 18 | 27 | 36 | 10 | 10 | | 30 | 40 | Jack (11) | 11 | 22 | 33 | 44 | Queen (12) | 12 | 24 | 36 | 48 | King (13) | 13 | 26 | 39 | 52 |

thanks minnesotapaintladyI need to use my rewards at this junction too. Have rewards that can be applied towards the payment for two of my cards. I had some upromise money I was trying to transfer yesterday - but they said they only do it first of the month and I don't want to count on that for my March shortfall projection. oooo - just did one of the cards - I was disappointed when I saw the reward pt balance because it started with 10... and I was like - really - only $10? Did I cash it out last month and not remember, I thought it was more..... It was over $100!! This is really going to help!!

Just an update to say that I won't be posting savings updates for a while. Dh had emergency surgery on 1.24 and may finally get out of the hospital in the next couple of days. I have been posting details on the parents thread. When the worst is past, i may start a more general thread to recap. Due to our continued savings over the past few years and excellent insurance, we don't have to worry about money while both of us are on medical leave. In fact, I haven't looked at our acct since surgery.
I'll resume posting, including our net savings loss, when my life settles down.

Nice update Saving4Norway. Here's my take on the "convenience fee". They make up the rules and have found a way to make $30 more, which is very convenient (for them). My daughter got a parking ticket in WA that aggravated. In a popular hiking area on a busy weekend she parked along the roadside as did many others. 2 officers were standing there at length which she mistook for it being okay. No signs stating no parking. At end of her hike she had a $150 ticket as did the whole big line of cars. If it's supposedly dangerous to park there or in that manner, shouldn't the law officers educate and prohibit? No, they stand by 'til the barrel of fish is full and then fire away. It gets better. You can go to court, or if you shut up and pay the ticket is $75, plus I believe there was a "convenience fee."

shanendoah [Q1]: $4,697.28 2/4/2020 (Goal: $5,040 3/31/2020) ROTH [Q1]: $3,500 1/1/2020 (Goal: $1,500 3/31/2020) Savings [Q1]: $1,197.28 1/10/2020 (Goal: $3,540 3/31/2020)
Transferred the $3k to C's ROTH today. This wasn't planned on, so would put me way over my goal for the quarter except that we also just had a $3600 service on the car. So for the rest of the quarter, instead of putting money in the savings account only to pull it out to pay for the car service, I won't be adding anything (beyond planned ROTH contributions) to savings and just paying off the service.

Saving4Norway 2/3/20 $2,200 (Goal $3,003) Lost the chance to add another $280 to my early retirement savings pot. I was convinced that my "SnowPark" recreational parking permit had not expired so I didn't even think to double check it when I went up near Mt Rainier to go snowshoeing. Dang. $250 fine for an expired permit and a $30 "convenience" fee. WTH?!?!? How was paying my fine inconvenient to them? Your ONLY choice is to pay with debit/credit card. Well, or go to jail, I suppose. I guess paying the fine WAS more convenient than going to jail... ugh! Try to reframe it as a donation to the park coffers? that will do some good? I'm sure those fees are a big part of their budget. Yep, that's exactly what I thought, too.

I think I have been tracking numbers wrong! My numbers carry over from year to year, so seeing my goal at 80% is cheating, ha-ha! Should I change the tagline to just what I plan to save for this year? I have only saved $831 of $12,000 for 2020.

However I think that I probably cash flow a lot of expenses that I don't record as saved and then spent, and hopefully it more than makes up for the "cheat factor".

Same here (about the "cheating")! I see myself at 27% of goal and I haven't contributed a bean this year. I thought Job 2 had messed up my paycheck because I did 6 hours of subbing and wasn't paid. I found out that since I'm on a "permanent" contract now, I'll only see that "extra" money once I've done ALL my contracted hours, ie in May. In other news, our tenant moved out, so we're now trying to sell our studio. The studio is nice but the building is problematic, so we'll see. PS I'd like to add that although I haven't made much progress, I have become much more conscious of spending and saving thanks to this thread. So thank you all for that.
This is the first time in years that I have had money in the bank and haven't spent it because "it's there so I can afford it". I have trouble adding to my savings but at least I'm doing my darndest to preserve them! And thanks to you I saved the 500 euros to see DS1 graduate in May. DH is making noises about not letting me spend my money for that, but it's still unclear. We'll see. DH is coming too. We will also be on babysitting duty that week, but we can live with that lol.

As I've gotten older, I have a better understanding of what affects in me, in terms of what I'm reading, tone, and responses. I have learned that I don't like TV shows or movies that have a lot of yelling. I don't like arguments: in person, on TV, or in print! I was just reading the general board on Next Door (neighborhood message board). Some people are just so snarky! People were criticizing posters about typos and grammar, calling one another "dumb", etc. I could feel the anxiety rising in me! I realized that I needed to get back here and commend everyone for constant support. I don't think I've ever read comments that have been negative. Is it because we are basically all women and we are more civilized? Is it because we post more than just a short quip? Whatever it is, keep it up. I hope you're all having a good weekend, spending a little and saving a lot!

I was hoping to get to maybe 75% of the Travel goal. I fell short a bit. Not beating up on myself too much, though. My tax refunds will be higher than I expected. I received my state tax refund already and immediately transferred it all into my Car Fund.
Will you be getting any tax refunds this year?

I think we are united in bringing encouragement and understanding here. We applaud each other's efforts and understand each other's failures. We walk the walk. Getting into the savings mode is not once and done. It takes some of us a few tries to get become a Saver, and once we do it can be fits and starts. I would hate to think we are unwelcoming or standoffish to male Savers.

I know we have male savers....that comment about about us getting along because we're women had a smiley after it which didn't come out. I'm glad we all encourage one another, men and women alike. It was meant in jest. Another thought: I was reading a FB post from a "friend" (someone I know by name only). I don't remember exactly what she was talking about but said that she doesn't have a savings account, "that idea is a scam anyway". Why would someone think that? Where do they keep their money?
