Checking in, I will probably not do my October update. We had a month of hospice care with my Father, at his home, and thankfully he died after only 2 rough weeks. He lived a long, happy life, was a GREAT Dad, and was golfing and gardening as recently as August. The family will gather this weekend for an outside luncheon after a graveside service. COVID changes everything, but one positive was it made us all determined to keep him at home where he could be with family. I missed a lot of work this month but am grateful that I could.

I'm so sorry plugginaway22. It's never easy, but you have found one silver lining in all this. You were able to keep your father at home, and I bet he really appreciated that.

Seriousthistime [3], 10/30/20, $28,000 (Goal $28,000) 100%
I have four more paychecks this year, and a final paycheck that will be paid in January.
I can still set some money aside, and I have some savings categories I'd like to top off. I'm thinking of adding another savings goal for 2020.

Had to replace the water heater and furnace this last month. We're paying for the water heater out of savings. We could have paid for the furnace out of savings, too, but chose an 18 months 0% interest offer. If something happens, we have the savings to pay it off. I pulled the money out of the brokerage accounts. One was with Robinhood. The other starting charging fees that they hadn't been charging before that were more expensive. The money from those will be part of what funds my ROTH. I had thought at first, with the water heater and furnace both going that I would have to let that goal go, but between the 0% interest offer and getting the $2k back from the brokerage accounts, I can still keep that goal. It really is just transferring money from one savings vehicle to another, but it's still a good plan.

Oh no!! So the catchup contributions need a separate form, a level amount per paycheck rather than Percent, and I did not get notified until too late, so very little taken out this time.... Which means my contributions going forward are going to have to be larger to max the catchup. Very inconvenient! Thankfully - looks like I at least made the min for the match this time. Paychecks will be really puny from here on out! Not sure how the tax will work out....Oh well! Will see how it all falls together... Rukh O'Rorke [2] Multiyear EF Goal
$20,765.80 (Start=$500 / Goal=$20,000)
even my increasing EF is starting to be a source of anxiety....was suppose to get some household stuff done before now (impending winter) and the increasing balance is just another reminder I haven't done it yet. sigh....onward.....somehow....

I missed a few months! We spent $7k to clear our land, which set us back, but we have done okay since. Of course, something always seems to pop up so I don't save as much as I would like to or should, but we are moving along on house building and saving is going okay. Seriousthistime [M], 11/11/20, $5,560 (Goal, $16,405)Hi all, I thought seriously about setting a goal to reach just between now and year end. And as I was going over the current balances in my various sub-accounts, I decided not to just set some modest goals I was pretty sure I could reach in the next 6 weeks, but -- for once -- to set goals that will continue into next year. Hence, the [M] in the tag line, for multi-year goals. When we start 2021, I'll take off the [M]. As I've stated here, ad nauseum, I'm retiring December 31. I'm pretty sure I know how the money will shake out, with lots of options to tweak if if there are any serious miscalculations. But savings goals will be more modest starting in 2021, and it will take me more time to reach them. And despite spending in all categories except Weekly Savings (which should be a solid SAVE with no SPEND, I hope), all will be sinking funds and the Goal amount is the amount I hope to be able to have saved after spending and replenishment. I expect this will not be the last word on these goals, and I may modify up or down as we go along. Cheers!

Looks like I didn't update 10/2 when I was able to deposit $1238. Today deposited 475. Fighting myself on replacing the carpet with laminate or luxury vinyl. Quote for 3 bedrooms and 1000 square feet of basement was $12k. Which is more than I want to take from savings. To be clear, our overall liquid savings is approaching $100k when we include the $23k saved this year. Part of the mental block is meeting that goal LOL. I will likely start a new thread in YM to ponder. 10/2 Azucena $23,441 of $30,000 goal (78%)Payday deposit of $961. Savings rate has slowed down as I'm not bothering to be as careful with spending in the craziness of the world right now. As I'm seeing online black friday deals, I'm buying things for our family and house. Likely also going overboard for kids Christmas as we're going to have to keep them busy thru this long winter. Waiting for the third bid for our flooring project. Found the luxury vinyl that we want for the basement. Trying to find one to match/coordinate with the upstairs hard wood. 1000 square feet of basement and 3 upstairs bedrooms. Likely cost $13k that comes from our overall savings. Just got our first direct bill property tax after refinancing and taking it out of escrow. We'll pay it ourselves when it comes, we said. Bill is $4700. Yowza! That will also come from savings. And, don't get me wrong, isn't unexpected but the timing right before Christmas along with the flooring bill is a triple whammy. Not escrowing is still the right choice for us. Plus refi put us at 2.5% interest rate and 15 yr repayment instead of 27 more yrs out of 30. Saves us $100k in interest and also means that I'm no longer pre-paying at all because our overall interest is $50k which I can live with. Dancing within $3800 of having $100,000 in liquid savings for the first time ever. Stinks not to at least kiss that goal but btwn flooring and taxes, buh bye for now. Will start fresh in 2021 and still overall pleased with our 2020 given that DH has been on unpaid leave and only netted $2100 this year instead of $25,000. 11/13/20 Azucena $24,402 of $30,000 goal (81%)

So to max out with the catchup, I guess it is 1626 per paycheck. A bit of an ouch.... Meanwhile the balances on my credit cards are very high. Medical expenses for all of us cropping up, and more coming before end of year. My computer eventually crapped out ... nearly completely...so got a new laptop. Also trying to shore up for the fall hunker down. I'm going to need to take from savings to pay the new balance this time around. Plan is to take from regular savings - want to leave the HSA money longer term if I can. Meanwhile, I wanted the regular savings money for bigger ticket items on my list, but....will see how that pans out. Just trying to keep chugging along and get to some time off over the holiday, hopefully, restful! oh! And fun of course....

It feels good to be back in a chart format. The past few Savings races have been just a tag line. I like setting goals for different uses. Last night I watched Confessions of a Shopaholic, on Netflix (Prime? not sure). Of course, not living in NYC I never shopped NYC-crazy but I could definitely relate to the fun of shopping for something. Nordstrom is expensive for me unless something is on serious sale. What is it about the word "sale" that makes us want to buy? I was thinking about all that as I was watching the movie. And then I ended up a Saver. Go figure.

Okay, here's the truth about the $6k in my ROTH - it is not new money. It was a transfer of money from liquid savings to the ROTH IRA, but still, I am proud of myself for saving enough during the year that here at the end I was able to say - liquid savings is high enough that I can just take $6k and make it non-liquid.

Happy to say we hit that last goal, thanks to DS's piggy bank! I am already starting to look forward to our 2021 Savings Goals and hope to post those here soon!

Saving4Norway You are the queen of saving! Congrats! I want to be like you someday!! Teachermom Well, shoot, thanks! A few things I contribute my success to - we're DINKS (Double Income No Kids), and I was raised with the saying "Pay Yourself First" which means automatically transfer your chunk into Savings at the BEGINNING of the month, like a bill, then live off the rest. We live far below our means so I'm able to comfortably able to save over half my take-home salary towards "early retirement" (to stop teaching) and luxuries such as international travel and season tickets. We recognize that we are blessed with a lot and so we give a lot. To church, to missions, to cultural and causes to support justice. You know - to whom much has been given, from him shall much be required. Or something like that. In this season of Thanksgiving, I am so thankful to you - this collection of friends who support me trying to reach my goals. I try not to lie to myself and make excuses. Having you to be accountable to brings out my best. Thank you all, S4N

For 2021, I'm going to actively track my Savings goals. I'll be in a position to truly contribute to them--rather than throw spare change at them--so it just makes sense. I'll post this one to get a sense of formatting and adjustments that need to be made.
Item Goal Current 3-6 Months $6,000 $227.32 Home Improvements (1) $8,000 $931.20 Funeral Travel Expenses $1,000 $385 (first to tackle) TSP $10,000 $955.70 (passive savings) IRA-Rollover $120,000 $12,241.90
Annuity xfer in 2023 $5,402.49
Total $145,000 $20,158.61
Nidena 11/21/2020 $20,158.61 (Goal $145,000.00 WIRS20)
