Taking the steps to fix our debt problem. Trying to do this the good old fashioned way isn't working, we need help. So I finally reached out to help yesterday and got my options. I am ready to rip the band aid off and start over.

Okay, here are my (somewhat) finalized 2020 goals. The first set is the goals we came up with as a family (with mostly input from my 7yo DS).
FAMILY GOALS: *Read 100 books (this will likely be done by end of January based on how many books I read aloud to DD(3) and DS(7), but it was a huge number to DS) *Visit all parks in our city (they do a city park challenge each year that we've talked about doing, but this year we're going to do it) *Take kids to a state they haven't been to before *Take kids to a country they haven't been to before (will likely also be new to DH and I, but we haven't solidified our vacation trip location yet) *Complete 50 puzzles (again, probably too low, but DS thought it was huge) *Try 24 new recipes *Plant a vegetable garden *Donate/get rid of at least 500 items (too low, but DS was balking at this number; final count better be higher) *Do 50 random acts of kindness
PERSONAL GOALS: (FINANCIAL) *Fully fund 401k and Roth IRA accounts for DH and me *Fund kids' 520 accounts at least as much as we did in 2019 *Invest at least 25% of cash that is over and above our e-fund *Set up wills and trusts
(HOME) *Replace our love seat and couch *Select and purchase an area rug for our living room *Replace the rug under our dining room table *Set up DD's bedroom (it has leftover stuff in it - mostly DH's - but just random stuff, so we need to fully convert it to *her* room) *Hang family pictures
(WELLNESS) *4000 sit ups *4000 push ups *52 class-type workouts *Read at least 36 books (for me - fiction, nonfiction, leadership, parenting, whatever strikes my fancy)
I should probably add some more to the wellness one, but I haven't figured out what yet, so we'll see what happens.

I vow to spend every dollar that comes in and not save a penny. Last year I fell short of my goal by around $1,800 but this year I will not fail.
I'm trying to spend all my money before I get too old to spend it.

And to stop talking and start doing. Mine is similar. I've made my resolution simply to begin. There are so many things I keep putting off for fear I won't be able to finish in a satisfactory way. I'm too focused on an end when the goal is really in the doing. Painting, writing, sewing, decluttering, meal planning, budgeting, exercising, learning to play the piano,...

Revamping everyone's food habits including the dog.
We're not as terrible as some but we have gotten into some bad habits of late.
We need to change anyhow due to our pocketbook so "we can't afford it" makes an easy excuse. If it's not in the house it can't be consumed.

I used to sort of look forward to thinking about what I wanted to accomplish when a new year rolled around. Then life happened, I got old, my knees hurt, my hands hurt all the time, and I'm tired. I think this year I'm just going to try not to die. And to spend more time petting dogs.

I still haven't come up with much besides the financial ones and reading. I put the check boxes chart on my fridge to hopefully check off 12 books for 2020. I know that isn't much compared to some here, but it will be 9 more than I read in 2019.
Ok, I lied. The check boxes chart never made it off the end table by the couch and as of today there are still no checks in the boxes. Last night Carrot found it looking for something. He just sighed and shook his head when he showed it to me.

ok - so before moving forward, thought I'd check how I did for 2020. I was extremely hesitant to look, but time to pull off the bandaid of ignorance... Financial GoalsSavings All savings goal met!- Max 401k plus catchup (26k)
- Max HSA plus catchup (8.1k)
- 10k EF (5k money market, 5k Market)
Debt Pay Down- Pay off highest interest student loan
- Get below 100k in SLs overall on hold as all at 0 percent/no payment most of year
- Check into a refi via sofi ditto
Home Improvement- Refi and catch up on big ticket items Refi done, waiting on check to commence - glad I waited as interest rates really came down from start of year
- Porch repairs
- Flood Control
- Exterior painting
- Window repairs/replace
- Garden hardscaping and Fence replacement
- Gardening and veggie beds
- Continuing room staging project This has acceptable progress for the year, more to do.
Charity/Societal Contributions
Household No progress
- Finish the paperwork and filing revamp
- Weekly chores consistency
- Look for cost cutting measures
Family/Social
- Start planning vacation! Obvious, did not happen
- Do monthly event more regularly - maybe add some museum or other cultural outings Family game night is all the rage!
- Monthly lunches or drinks with Friends Obvious, did not happen
Career
- Maybe a job search thankfully, everyone that was making work intolerable has moved on.
- Develop and send out research manuscripts related to dissertation research by June 1st. got 1 rejection (on not-dissertation work, just a class project I tried to upgrade) and gave up....maybe I will revisit 2021.....
- Continue to build Rukh, Inc. holding steady, did not build much outside of extra project from existing client
Health Fitnessok - lifting heavily from 2019 to get this started.......some bullet points to be developed later. Wow - looks like I never got around developing any Health and Fitness goals. I actually did pretty ok in this category in 2020. Unfortunately, it was due to a health problem that cropped up and it was time to walk the walk on what I knew I needed to do. Still a ways to go, and I did much better in summer when I was able to do my yoga out of doors. Have started to get back into the yoga since I've had some time off EOY. I've been doing raw vegan food only since about July 7th with very few indulgences and stuck through it thanksgiving and xmas. It takes a lot longer to see results in your 50s than your 30s or even 40s, but have a bit of a glow to my skin again. Everything is looking a bit tighter and brighter. I have been relying too heavily on heavier raw foods. For example - have some walnut banana date flax buckwheat pancakes in the dehydrator now. Super ymmy, but still very calorie and sugar dense....will try to focus on lighter foods in 2020 - but again - much easier in the summer. Yoga in the heat, indoors for a smoothie the consistency of softserve and eat with a spoon. Don't enjoy frozen smoothies in the winter....old drafty house, and try to keep temps to the sweaters and hoodie degrees.

I am going to bake 40 new baked items and cook 40 new dinner recipes. I find putting fun things that I really want to do on my resolution list makes the whole process more enjoyable, and actually achievable. On our fridge, I put a piece of paper with the goal and boxes, and when I do it, I check a box. That way I am reminded that it is something I want to do, and if I am keeping up with it all year. I didn't do any of that. I dont even remember saying that, nor did I do anything to make it happen. For Christmas, my husband got me a tablet specifically for using for recipes in the kitchen. Maybe I will put a goal tracker on that tablet just to track new recipes in 2021. Or maybe, I will just trudge along with no real goals.

Resolutions Use the quadrant management system and refine my use of the seven habits. I'm good at some of them, but I don't utilize all of them. --Plan each night the upcoming day. Set aside time in my evening routine to make that happen. --Create and maintain healthy eating habits --Find something to do with my life that is outside of work and parentingGoals --Lose 20 more pounds (have lost 10 pounds in the previous six weeks) --Start paying parent plus loan for DD#1 --Continue with only cash for DD#2's college (avoid taking out loans) --Pay $14K toward camping trailer (minimum required payment totals $5,200 annually) --get into a doctoral program for educational leadership | start program in Fall2020 --read 40 books (this was a 2019 goal, but I only reached 32 books) --Take one weekend per month for "getting away" (This was a goal in 2018. In 2019 my health issues prevented most traveling.) OMG! EPIC FAILURES!!! Can I blame 2020?

Obviously. 2020 takes the blame for everything. We have another day and a half, so if there is anything else

Okay, let's see what did/did not happen from 2020 goals. [Reminder to self that the first set is the goals we came up with as a family (with mostly input from my 7yo DS).] FAMILY GOALS: *Read 100 books - more than done *Visit all parks in our city - did not happen; parks were closed for half the summer, and then I didn't feel comfortable taking them to parks until fall; but they spent a lot of time on their outdoor playset in our yard *Take kids to a state they haven't been to before - check, we did a weekend trip to Arkansas in February pre-pandemic, which was a new state for both kids *Take kids to a country they haven't been to before - fail, thanks Covid *Complete 50 puzzles - I didn't count, but based on the puzzles we did during stay-at-home this spring, plus all the kids puzzles, this happened *Try 24 new recipes - ha ha ha ha, I totally forgot about this; pretty sure I did a handful of new recipes, but nowhere near 24 *Plant a vegetable garden - sort of! we did plant tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers in a raised bed and just holes in the ground, but I'm counting it! *Donate/get rid of at least 500 items - not sure if we hit this or not as I stopped counting, but I think we did - passed clothes DS outgrew to a friend, sold a ton of baby stuff, and donated other stuff *Do 50 random acts of kindness - didn't track this, so no idea, but I hope we did PERSONAL GOALS: (FINANCIAL) *Fully fund 401k and Roth IRA accounts for DH and me - DONE! *Fund kids' 520 accounts at least as much as we did in 2019 - DONE! And then some - we ended up funding the max for each kid we get a state tax break on *Invest at least 25% of cash that is over and above our e-fund - didn't happen; I got promoted and now will be a shareholder, so I need a chunk of that for my down payment in early 2021, so not doing this worked out *Set up wills and trusts - FAIL! this will be on my 2021 goals (again) (HOME) *Replace our love seat and couch - DONE! we actually did this in early January, so we got to enjoy it all year *Select and purchase an area rug for our living room - FAIL; we did get rid of the old rug, so just have the hardwoods there, and it's actually been okay *Replace the rug under our dining room table - NOPE; kids are still messy eaters, but I hate the old rug enough, I may just replace it anyway *Set up DD's bedroom (it has leftover stuff in it - mostly DH's - but just random stuff, so we need to fully convert it to *her* room) - DONE! *Hang family pictures - DONE! and this one probably only happened due to COVID as I was home long enough to want to get it done, LOL (WELLNESS) *4000 sit ups - ha ha ha ha; major fail and I didn't even track after maybe 2 weeks *4000 push ups - ha ha ha ha; major fail and I didn't even track after maybe 2 weeks *52 class-type workouts - also a fail, though I did start off the year okay attending classes at my work office gym *Read at least 36 books (for me - fiction, nonfiction, leadership, parenting, whatever strikes my fancy) - YES!!! I actually read 48 books, which makes me happy because I love reading and I had more time to do it this past year.

I need to get healthy in 2020. I've been drinking way too many martinis and eating whatever I want. My mom is having major health issues because of not taking care of herself and I do not want to follow. The good news is that this hasn't been a 20 year lifestyle so hopefully the damage is minimal. The bad news is that it has become my new norm so it isn't going to be easy. Hmm..epic fail on this one! I’m ending the year heavier than I started and I’m probably drinking more martinis. I’m blaming Covid! But these are my too goals for 2021.

laterbloomer this is the last one for resolutions that I find I posted. I probably stopped because every year everyone is like posting......"I don't do resolutions...." but I'm going to plan, goal, try to, blah blah blah..... But you know what new year's resolutions threads do that none of the goals/plans/trying/threads do? Help you find freaking threads. that's what.
