I know here in the Phoenix area there are cooling centers in the summer ....... and warming centers in the coldest winter months.
All the charities that send 'stuff' to us during the holiday season we'll drop a $20 and send back to them. We send cash and cross or discard all identifying marking. We are already on too many lists.
We also donate quite a bit to these centers through our church. As you said, every little bit helps

Huh. I've never heard of a either a warming center, or a cooling center.
I wonder if we have them in my area? I think we just have shelters. During the day, people have to find somewhere else to go.
I used to live in a big old house that had been converted into apts. It had a main outer door, and several doors inside. There was a large homeless man that didn't speak English and was really ornery, who would get drunk, then come in and sleep in our hallway. He was scary!

We have warming and cooling centers here in Memphis. A number of homeless people but a lot of poverty where citizens cannot afford a/c systems in their poorly insulated homes. The city also gives away fans and window a/c units to those really in need.

We have a cold weather shelter that is just open during the winter months. I had wanted to set up a monthly donation from my credit card, but they wouldn't accept anything other than a check through the mail, and then they never acknowledged receiving the check. So I ended up setting up the monthly donation with the food bank instead.

We have both warming and cooling centers.
We have overnight shelters but people need somewhere to go during the day when the weather is bad. If they are job hunting, they need a place to shower.

I thought a fight was going to break out at 7-11 a few weeks ago. An older man asked for change. As the person was getting it, a young girl stepped in between them, asking for change. She clearly did this on purpose, and she had a look about her that would make you afraid to defy her.
It can be scary to go for groceries.
Before long, the homeless will outnumber those with homes.

Btw, if you’re homely, there’s plastic surgery. If you’re homeless, that’s different.

I’m not worried at all. I can protect myself. I have the right to shop at Publix and have a Starbucks without my purse being stolen, both of which has happened to others. Or being approached aggressively for money. That’s called extortion.

Let me get this straight,,,if u get jostled by a shopping cart on a busy weekend at Publix or approached by a panhandler and u find it threatening.....it's ok to reach for your personal weapon and set things straight....correct? Ok...good luck with that...

Dezii-some people pull their firearms for the craziest of things. Here in Memphis the other day. Police: Woman Upset She Received Wrong Condiment Pulls Gun on McDonald’s Workers in MemphisAuthorities in Tennessee say an irate woman pointed a gun at fast food workers because they gave her ketchup instead of jelly. Asia Vester, 20, was arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, news outlets are reporting. According to a Memphis police affidavit, Vester was in the drive-thru line of a McDonald’s last week when she received her food and realized her request for jelly was either forgotten or unheeded. She instead received ketchup. Words were exchanged with several employees. Vester was accused of pulling out a gun and pointing it at employees, the affidavit says. Surveillance video led police to Vester. link

Thanks for the thread. We do have to keep them in our efforts and not let them become "invisible" Home in Indiana we have some cooling centers in the summer, but it is not just for the homeless. Many elderly and poor who have no airconditioning need them too. Warming centers are usually more for the homeless, as utilities cannot turn off service during the cold months, but some city buildings are available for all on the brutal days...... Florida citizens seem to do a good job for the homeless, but most are not camping out on the sidewalks in plain site. They are out of sight on overgrown vegetation lots/acreage sites, but have facilities available to them in most cities for bathing, food and clothing. Neighbors in our hoa are always putting out notices to residents for supplies that are in short supply for a few centers in our area taking care of the homeless. SWFL has a huge food center for the under fed population that is not just for the homeless. Harry Chapin food bank. harrychapinfoodbank.org/This is a great organization!

Sunday we’re doing a neighborhood picnic and asking for socks and hygiene supplies. I’m on the committee and we got everything donated including a bounce house so we’re hoping for generous donations since you’re eating and playing for free. I bought the name tags and tablecloths from the dollar store. Plus the gift bags full of goodies for the kids. Any food or gift bags leftover go to a place that feeds them.

My DD1 is in medical school. She spends a lot of time volunteering at a low/no income (pay what you can, no one is turned away) medical clinic. What she sees there is sad and frightening. She is also very good at de-escalating people now and being able to 'walk the walk' so no one bothers her.

We transformed a vacant hospital into a pet-friendly homeless shelter.

I'm sure we have homeless in our little towns but I have never seen any. I think here friends or family take them in. We lived near Houston and I saw blocks of them downtown. We don't have warming centers or anything so if they are out there I don't know where. I would bet some are living in houses with little or no heat, possibly no running water and such and I'm sure they are out there. Our police will also see why someone is loitering. At Walmart we see beggars at times but likely come off highway 41 which is close by, they aren't there long.
Here we take up to buy kids clothes, shoes, coats. At school they have extra things that kids need from school supplies to everything. Our community always exceeds any kind of donations for anything and anybody. We do have people here with lots and lots of money. We have 3 banks in a town of less then 7000, with only 12k in the whole county.

Our little town is too small to have a warming or cooling center. We do have a couple charities that donate warm clothing & fans in the summers. We are like country girl, if there are homeless we don't see them...most stay with a friend or relative around here. We do have a shelter that provides some meals & a food bank as well as an abused women's/children's shelter. We donate to that often. They need everything when they are ready to leave the shelter as most leave home with only what they have on their backs...so they need linens, furniture, kitchen utensils, cookware, curtains...everything! We also donate old books & magazines to some of the local nursing homes...they love getting them! Or books will go to the VA. The facility that DH visits the most often finally put in a nice bookcase...with a sign...take one, return one...enjoy! Last year at our library's annual book sale, I filled my pickup truck bed with books...total cost to me was $25! These were in boxes & you couldn't squeeze any more in there...the ladies helped me load. Many of those have since made their way to the VA.
Countrygirl...just off the top of my head, we have at least 7 banks here with a general population of about 25,000. Our county is the largest ag producing county in the state...so LOTS of farm land around here, not as many people. Also LOTS of chicken houses.

The homeless are visible in my city. They are downtown, in shelters, living in shopping center parking lots in their cars. It was a major issue in the last mayor election, as the city has appealed a district court ruling and are waiting to see if the SC will hear that case. During the day they hang out in public buildings like the local library. Housing affordability is a major issue, the wages here haven't kept up with the cost of even a crappy apartment.

Homeless people have become a major issue where I live. They used to keep to themselves for the most part. Now a lot of them have attitude, as if it's everyone else's responsibility to take care of them.
I'm sorry they're homeless. But that doesn't give them the right to harass, or bother people.

Many homeless people are mentally ill or have other issues.
The more social programs are cut the more homeless people there are.

If we’d quit pissing money away on crap that no taxpayers want to begin with, we’d have mental institutions again but of course they can’t be locked up against their will and no one mentally ill thinks they are.
