Does anyone own one? DH brought it up as a possible Christmas present. He's up on the latest technology while I could care less. Looking for a quick rundown of cost, pros, cons, any other advice.

What would he use it for? Would you need special 3D software to go with it?

DH has one. It is like a gateway drug, he got one, now he thinks he needs another to do something. I really don't pay a lot of attention. It was something something dual extruder, nylon/rubber, larger build area? Then thousands of dollars.
It is handy. Had DH print a cover plate for the new thermostat, which mounts weird and didn't have a corresponding cover plate available.

You could play with one there, too.

I recently read something about 3D printers shedding large quantities of microscopic fibers that are causing lung problems for folks who work with them constantly.
But, then I read another article where the University of Maine printed a 25 foot seaworthy boat in about 24 hours — the largest single item printed to date.
So, 3D printers are both very cool and very scary.

I worked a little with one. They’re really cool, but what is he going to use it for? It does require special software, and the consumables it uses are not cheap.

He will use it mostly to print miniatures for gaming and just general messing around. He's always been interested in the latest technology, so it doesn't surprise me that he brought this up. He was also thinking it would be good bonding time with DD11 to learn about it together. He said the plastic or whatever it takes is pretty cheap now. Sometimes he glosses over details though so I need to dig deeper. I told him to price it out and provide me with more info, and then I'd consider it. Interesting insight about the particles being an issue - makes sense and something to be mindful of.

They brought some to the library last summer for a children's summer reading program. They were pretty cool, but I wouldn't get one just to make more clutter. If he were to sell the miniatures, that would be one thing, but it would probably be one more thing his loser friends would mooch off of him.

They seem to be enjoying it and use it a lot. They have made replacement parts for lost elements of small appliances and other things as well. One of the boys has found it useful for his high school AP graphic design class.

I know Omaha has a maker's space where you can play with things like 3D printers, do you have one of those in your area? Let him play with that before investing in something else that will take up space in your house.

We have a small one at work and was $1K when it was purchased. Has already saved the company huge $$$$ since then in just 'stuff'' that needs to be used. Before the 3D printer all of this stuff had to be designed and made in aluminum with a wait time of ?? While it's fun to watch, I hope DH doesn't get the bug to have one. What would we use it for?

Eh, we have a 1000 square feet in the basement including an unfinished workroom where he would keep it. We've been in a better place for 3 months or so. He even upped his retirement by the amount of his raise all on his own.

One of the boys has found it useful for his high school AP graphic design class. Do they talk about how much the material costs? No, I've never heard them mention the price of the material. They are, however, quite financially responsible and not given to profligate spending, so I am just guessing that it is not outrageously expensive. They would probably be considered affluent, though, so something that might be too expensive to another family might not seem expensive to them. This probably isn't very helpful, but it's all I've got.
