Would you buy another one, good, bad, junk? If you didn’t see my other thread I totaled my car this week so I’m on the hunt for another one. I want all wheel drive and a coupe, so that’s my starting point. I will also buy used, being a good YMer.
After looking at a wide selection of “wants” I think I have to rule out a 911 or a Jaguar F-Type (although the jag is still weighing heavily on my mind). The A5 seems to be the perfect car, and the prices are 40-50% lower than the Porsche. I like the looks of it, but know very little about it. Audi’s don’t have the cool factor for me, but they might just be the perfect car. I drive 130 miles round trip everyday for work in all kinds of weather, so it needs to be “fun” to drive, but not so stiff that it beats me up.
Thoughts?

One of my nephews has one and he loves it! He lives in London, the car is diesel, I believe a 2000cc or about, gets on the high 40 mpg. Took a few rides in it, handles great, comfortable, etc. This is a 2014 sedan, 4 door, everything electric/electronic. Quiet and smooth ride and the car has somewhere on 150000 miles. Id buy one if I were looking for a car to drive. I read a while back that in Europe, Audi4 is/was the vehicle of choice for “gateway car”😂

my dad had an old one back when I was in HS. it's actually what I learned to drive stick on. his only complaint, and why he ultimately junked it, was that wheel bearings don't care that the rest of the car could keep cranking another couple hundred thousand miles. they still want new replacement cost. the car was already over 200k at that point.
I'm not sure how much has changed in 20y, but German cars tend to be consistent.

When I am no longer paying college tuition, I want a red Audi TT convertible — the “complete opposite of a soccer Mom minivan” car. Two seats — one for me, one for the dog. 😈. I had an Audi Fox in the late 70s which I ran into the ground and have had a long line of VWs. I guess I just love the mix of German practicality and performance.

I had an A4 from September 2000 to December 2010 (123 months). I put about 114,000 miles on it & the car was falling apart when I traded it in. I spent over $5,000 in repairs the final year and it probably would have cost me thousands more if I kept it any longer. Among the problems when I traded it in were the AC was shot & needed a new compressor, the car had an oil leak, the cam adjuster was going & would have needed replacement within a year and the trim was loose on the doors. I had the worst door trim fixed for $131 before I traded it in.
Basically, the car drove well & was fun to drive but after 10 years/114,000 miles it was ready for the scrap heap. If you don't care what a car is like after 10 years, Audi is a good car, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is looking at owning a car beyond 10 years.
My cost of ownership for the 10 years, excluding interest on my car loan, gas (premium required) & insurance were:
Original cost $31,622
Repairs/maintenance: $14,137
Total: $45,759 = $372/month, 40 cents per mile.

Thank you, that’s the kind of feedback I’m looking for, I plan to drive any car for 300,000+ miles so longevity is important to me.

My supervisor bought one a few years ago. Dunno what model, it was a four door sedan just a few years old. He didn’t have a good experience-spent maybe $38-42K on it used, things kept breaking most notably the transmission. After a couple of years he gave up and sold it for about $2K. He’s driving a Honda now and much happier with it. DH has a Caddy ATS, maybe a 2015 I think? He bought it used/maybe a year old. It’s been a solid car and fun to drive-a bit of a shock sometimes to look down at the speedometer and realize exactly how far over the speed limit you are

Here's all I know about Audi.
DD#2 likes to say to us when she's leaving the house:
"Like the car, I'm Audi."

The only thing I know about Audi cars is that they are tough--at least in the early 90's. A co-worker got hit by the tires of a semi that flew off his semi when the axles broke. They flew in to her windshield, which broke. That caused her to lose control of the car and it ended up in a ditch.
With all of that, she had no serious injuries. The ambulance crew that came was amazed. Somehow she managed not to get cut by flying glass.
Very shaken up but she always said that car saved her life.

My mom had a couple A4s on leases. They were fine but they were new. I hear they drive well, but I wouldn't go there (or to any German car for that matter) due to the expense as they age.

The only thing I know about Audi’s is that most of them are pretty to me. I don’t personally know anyone who owns one, so I’m no help. But I sure do like the way they look!
