Smart people are still people. If they have emotional needs that are not being met, there is an opening for someone to come in and exploit that. It doesn't mean they aren't smart, it just means they have human needs, and trusted the wrong people. I believe Jim Jones had a big social justice component. Eliminate racism, live in peace, etc. Smart people can be into that. But, once a cult finds an opening and gets you locked in, it gets really difficult. All your friends are part of it, who are you going to turn to? People left their jobs and families and homes to go to Jonestown to prove that races can happiky live together. When they got there, they had a home and a community, but not a job, or a car, or an independent support system. They dont know the region or culture. It takes a lot of guts to abandon your friends and walk out into the street with nothing but the clothes on your back and hope you can find someone to help you. Plus, if you are smart, maybe you think that you can fix it - you can be part of the solution. But alas....when they are holding a gun to your head you realize you could not.

There were definitely smart people there. If you really believe that you, as a young person, would have never fallen for someone's bullshit (a) you are probably wrong and (b) you probably had a more stable childhood than most. Your inability to understand the human condition shows your own bias and your own bubble.

Very much starting to remind me of 1974 when I would rush home after class to watch the latest on Watergate and the slow dissolution of the hated NIXXON’s presidency. At the beginning of the Trump presidency, I thought impeachment would be a very bad idea.  He was a horrible president, but I could ride it out for 4 years.  I thought by impeaching him, it would just make a martyr of him and further fracture the country.   As time passed, as his misdeeds have piled up, as we've been able to observe through his own words, as more crimes have been committed, I've changed my tune.  Fuck that noise, get rid of this idiot.  He is of limited intelligence, petulant, petty, narrow minded, narcissistic, without values, doesn't appear to have any policies, and cannot distinguish himself from the country.

I wish I was old enough to remember the Nixon developments.  I was 4.  

I'd really like a frame of reference to compare this to.    Were there really people who backed Nixon until his resignation?  Didn't think he did anything wrong?  We need another Walter Cronkite. 

I'm hoping we eventually come out OK on the other side.

If we don't put a stop to this kind of Presidency, it will become the norm, for both parties. It will be a way to use the office for personal gain, and things will get really sketchy as each president will push the boundaries just a little bit, and soon, we won't be able to recognize what the Presidency should be.

I am flabbergasted by the number of people who don't realize how much Trump is making off the Presidency.  Every trip he takes to his resorts is a windfall to him.  The staff and secret service agents sleep there and eat there, and drive his golf carts.    He doesn't do this for free, or at cost.  He'd be sure to tell us if it was at cost. 

Yes, I know he "handed over management" of his empire to his kids.  He never said he wasn't getting paid.   He'd also tell us if he did that too, because he is incapable to doing anything positive without tweeting all about it.

The real question I have is how Nixon got from cocky, paranoid narcissist to accepting the writing is on the wall and seeing that things were only going to get worse. Honestly, if Trump holds out, he might be exonerated, but it would be better for him if he made a deal with the party that he would quit in exchange for blanket immunity or pardon for every single crime ever, him and his kids. And somehow figure out how to get that to cover state crimes, too. If they can drag this out for another 15 months, he may even win re-election and the evangelicals can have weirdo Pence making this country Gilead.

Honestly, I'm surprised he hasn't just lied about this. He lies about everything else. If he told his supporters that everyone stays at his resorts and eats for free, they would believe him, even if SS expenditures showed differently.

. There are STILL folks that think Nixxon did nothing wrong. That believe what he told David Frost in the infamous interview that if the President does it it can’t be illegal. It’s easy to see that Trump follows that .

I will never forget riding in the car listening to the hearings on the radio and it was revealed that Nixon taped conversations in the oval office...The one interviewing the witness just moved on with other questions...I had pulled over to the side if the road nand was yelling at the radio about the guy going back and question about the tapes...as if they had missed something...[they hadn't...know now they knew all of what witnesses were reporting]

Show how we were all[most of us] innocents on all this stuff....Also remember Kefauver hearings on organized crime...parents were really into nit...not the kids so much..[kids...me]
