I heard that in 2013 you would only be able to contribute 2500. That sucks for me because I use that sucker a lot. I was going to get my son lasix, braces for me, I need a tooth implant. Even root canals are $800 and Dh seems to need them every two years or so it seems.

Stating with plan years after Dec 31 2012 the limit is $2,500 so you are correct.

So that benefit is disappearing fast. First they took away the OTC drugs without doctor's prescription (Claritin anyone?) and now they half the money you can put in. You can see the end coming from a mile away

Although a HDHP isn't for everyone, I wish they were more widely available for the HSA. HSAs are much better than FSAs

Easy. But, what is the cost? FDA determined it's appropriate to self diagnose for free. Obama, the self-assigned health cost reducer, is asking you to involve an MD and PharmD.

May be just one Claritin -not too hard, but how about Excedrin and Infant Tylenol and Tums and Cough Syrup, etc etc
So, now every time I need anything, I have to get a prescription?

It's a PITA. I got scripts for aspirin, imodium etc. And it then goes on your medication list on file etc. Ridiculous.

So, do you actually have to go through the pharmacy or just grab things from the shelf and then submit for reim attaching the script?

So, if you get a scrip for an OTC drug, do you have to buy it through the pharmacy? A couple years ago I got a scrip from a Dr for Prilosec, it was much more expensive thru the pharmacy b/c my co-pays on my insurance are really high. It was much cheaper to buy OTC.
I don't bother with OTC meds in my FSA..looks like my FSA might be wiped out already...if only DH would give me is $500.00 worth of dental receipts from a week or two ago I could get a reimbursement.
Can you do the OTC med reimbursement through your HSA too?

Lena, I bought them OTC, not through the pharmacy. As long as they have your script on file you just submit it like normal with a recipt.

The problem for me with HSA's ( I have had them for three years at DH last job) is that you are still limited to 5k and you now have your deductibles to pay out of it. It takes a while to build it up and we never did in those three years. So you actually have less money available for typical FSA out go's.

Wow. I bet the retail companies that upgraded their software to comply with the FSA rules (so their system would 'know' OTC aspirin was a legitimate FSA expense that could be charged to an FSA Debit card) are pissed....
