Did they really think they could just keep this money?
That's a lot of overdraft charges!

That is really stupid. All that stuff can be impounded. They clearly should have spent it on things the bank couldn't just take away from them.

If it goes the way it did with my embezzling neighbor back in the day, they'll let them sell all that stuff to try and repay as much of the money as possible.

This reminds me of an armored car robbery several years back in NC.
The guy was a construction worker, and his wife didn't work. Suddenly he was moving into a million dollar home, bought 4 tanning beds, multiple high end cars and trucks - all supposedly on a construction worker's salary.
When his wife took some of the money to the bank to put into an account, it still had the Brinks money wrappers on the stacks. She showed up with about 50K and asked the teller how much could she put in without them notifying the government - when she found out it was something like 10 - 20 K, she took her money and left.
Not at all suspicious. They didn't even bother to move far away and start life over as the heirs to some fake fortune - they stayed in their hometown.
Idiots.

wow, how did he get into a million dollar house? I'd think couldn't pay cash - but also couldn't get mortgage?

The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me...
It ceased to amaze me many years ago.

My weird experience. My late Dad's estate was being settled. I had $20,000 put in my account. So did my older brother. My middle brother was $10,000. Both myself and older brother had the additional $10,000 reversed out of our accounts with no explanation. My current broker just said you should have cashed out.

wow, how did he get into a million dollar house? I'd think couldn't pay cash - but also couldn't get mortgage? They stole 17.3 million in cash from the Charlotte, NC Loomis/Fargo branch. The guy moved from his mobile home to a luxury house, his wife got a Toyota sienna minivan in two cash payments and a BMW Z3 with cash. Apparently the guy thought the FBI would only investigate people who worked directly for Loomis/Fargo, and he didn't (his friend did - the friend planned the robbery, got the cash out of the building, then took some and flew to Mexico, leaving the bulk of it with his pal, who started spending like a drunken sailor). Didn't take the FBI too long to figure something was up with them.
Apparently, some people call this the 'hillbilly heist.'

I was thinking that sounded familiar! I just saw that movie. I'm sure they embellished the story a lot, but it was hilarious! I didn't realize it was based on a true story until the end, and I was like, "WTH? Really?" LOL

OT but there is a series of MasterMind shows on one of the "off channels" The Justice channel something or other. It is about master thieves of all kinds. Of course they all get caught in the end but the few that I saw were interesting to say the least. I didn't see the movie referenced above but I do remember the heist in NC.

My DH used to work in law enforcement and had the opinion that most criminals were really dumb, which was a good thing, because it made them easy to catch.
