I'd rather pay taxes so that NOBODY goes hungry. So that NOBODY has to eschew healthcare because they can't afford it. So that everyone has a roof over their heads.

I just found a new way to make money,,, O.C. has lost his job, got kicked out of the house, lost all my credit cards ,my truck is broke, my penmanship is so bad I can not make up a sign to even stand on the corner! I used all my money to buy whiskey, now I am sick from drinking that whiskey,,
So here is a desperate call to all of you wonderful people that want to give O.C. money so I can buy some food, Whiskey, and not have to sleep with the dog again, he hogs all the covers!! Welts will feel so sorry for me.

I already feel sorry for you. You bring out the "there but for the grace of God" feelings in me. Can't be easy going through life being so ignorant.

with the president of the United States declaring
"I'm the King of Israel" "I am the Chosen One" "I am the 2nd coming of God" ? Back to the OP.... A quote from some other place...a reminder... "All I've got to say is there have been a few folks in the recent and not so recent past who have called themselves the chosen one. The three that immediately came to mind to me were Jim Jones, David Koresh, and Charles Manson. Need I say more?"

You always think that if it applies to you and yours, then it's across the board.
Spoken like a true liberal
because from where I sit, they appear to be prepared to roll back a generation of civil rights.
How?

disagree? because a key portion of the VRA is already gone, so you are standing on one leg if you are going to make that case.

One difference between conservatives and liberals:
Conservative: "It could never happen to me so I don't care." Liberal: "It could happen to someone else so I have to care."
One of those denotes a very small worldview, and generally a very small person. (Hint: It's not the latter of the two.)

As I interacted with people through work for many years, I heard from a number of employees whose grandmother died (for the fifth and sixth time). Our managers kept track. Those looking for bereavement pay and other paid time off due to a death of a particular grandparent for the umpteenth time were of all races, nationalities, and ethnicities and not just Hispanic.

And I experienced the same thing as a drug store manager and a grocery store front end manager...I kept track. I fired a few when I said NO, you can not take off since this is your 5th grandparent dying. We also had one gal who used to call in that her car broke down over the weekend & she couldn't get to work on Mon...we debated making her show us a repair bill receipt...like a Dr.'s excuse. The manager didn't agree with us. Forgot to say...these were all races, not one in particular.

I do realize this is so not the point of this thread, however,
If a child's mom and dad divorce and each re-marry someone else. Then that child potentially has
Mom=two grandparents Step-parent=two grandparents
dad=two grandparents step-parent=two grandparents
That's a potential of eight grandparents.

My mom's parents divorced & remarried. So I had a grandpa & a step grandma and a gramma & a step grampa.

The statistics are well-known concerning whether red or blue states are more dependent on government largesse and which have a higher percentage of their residents on things like food stamps. I suggest you familiarize yourself with them. Blue states almost without exception subsidize red states.

""I'm not saying everyone deserves to be rich. I'm saying every kid should get a safe place to live, enough decent food to not be hungry, and a good enough education they can go to trade school or college, if they have the ability. Did you know 80% of prisoners in the US are illiterate? What percentage of those people do you think might have ended up working a job and supporting a family, if they'd been taught to read and write well?
Are they 100% responsible for being illiterate, or do we look at why our education system is failing so many kids? Or why such a large percentage of poor minority guys get incarcerated for minor drug violations, when a larger percentage of white kids smoke pot?"""
That 2.3 M prisoners in the US amounts to about 0.07% of us, the other 99.93% of us are functioning within our societal system. We should not be tailoring our society to fix the few outliers, we should design it to work for the 99.93% - and build workarounds to help the outlier exceptions. As for 80% of the 0.07% being illiterate - that is not a reflection on our educational system (altho that sucks - another subject), it is more likely to correlate with mental abilities. Ie, if they had not been in jail, they are still unable to learn/function at a normal level. Just saw a thing this weekend about dyslexia. Used to be, educators thought it was a fairly rare thing - 1 in 20 might have it. Then a wealthy woman, a former surgeon married to a US congressman, took her daughter to a variety of specialists to find out why her very smart kid couldn't read. Turned out, she had severe dyslexia. Because she was born into a wealthy family, she got help for it. Middle class or lower class kids don't - they often get passed off as stupid or slow, when in fact, they're very smart, but words don't make sense. This wealthy woman started a program to research dyslexia, and found out it's 1 in 4 kids who have some degree of it. She helped found a charter school just for kids with dyslexia (they can learn to read, but they have to learn by memorizing the shapes of words, not by looking at the letters). Then she went into prisons and tested a bunch of prisoners, and found out 50% of the people behind bars have dyslexia which was never diagnosed or treated.
So sure, you can tell yourself the people behind bars are lazy, or stupid, and they get what they deserve - but the facts are that they got passed over in our educational system without learning how to read, usually due to learning disorder that's treatable.
So let me ask my question again - say 50% of the people in jail are illiterate due to being dyslexic, and have the ability to learn to read if taught correctly - what if those people got the help they needed as kids to be successful? (And forget the total percentage of people in jail statistic - that's the number of people in jail at any one time, and doesn't include those who go in and out of jail, or become chronically unemployed because they're a felon, and spend a lifetime poverty). Wouldn't the cost to provide a good education, including treatment for dyslexia, be far less than having to pay for a lifetime of welfare, food stamps, or housing prisoners?
We waste huge numbers of people who could be contributing to society, rather than being a burden on it, because people get caught up in wanting to punish the lazy poor people by withholding any government handouts.

The people who had to stay in town and weather the storm were either too stubborn to leave, too foolish to leave (thinking the storm wouldn't be too bad) or too poor to leave (no transportation, and New Orleans didn't do a great job of providing public transportation to assist in leaving town).
Not sure how you decided everyone who stayed in town was a "liberal" - I'm sure there were people of all political persuasions who decided to stay.
Except that in your mind, all the good white people are conservatives, and all the stupid brown ones are liberals.

That's before you get into the other behavioral disorders, like ADHD, that decrease both learning ability and impulse control. And that's before you get into racist policing and our broken justice system.

You forgot our Puritan heritage too. I am reading Enlightenment Now and skimmed thru some of it and there is a whole chapter that is statistical data showing the more religious a country the more harshly they treat poverty because it is seen as "punishment" from God for not being good industrious workers like those who have succeeded.
The Anti-vaxxer movement has the same theme. I don't need vaccines because I am rich/white/hardworking/Christian enough that I won't ever get sick. It's only dirty poor illegal brown people who need vaccines because I don't want to catch stuff from them!.
The more secular a nation, the more social programs there are that benefit the elevation of society as a whole because it's recognized that things like poverty are a public health issue and not a moral vice.

my experience with the anti-vaxxers is that they don't trust government, and they believe stuff which is verifiably false. it is actually quite similar to the Trump voter.

people who make tamales/tacos usually live in groups. Like 10 to a room?? Any time they want time off it is because their Grandmother has died, I know of one that their Grandmother has died 6 times now!
People who make Tamales can make a hella lot of $$ selling them to other people who don't have said talent. My Mother-in-law makes them for family. She only does it several times a year. They sell them in the deli for maybe $4 apiece. DH buys them from people that come into his office occasionally because it is worth taking a chance on them. I want to say he pays maybe $12 a dozen. My inlaws live 2 people to a house that is at least 1200 square feet, and they own an income property.

Bean, that was my point, there are a million ways to make money. Ever wonder why there so many Jewish tailors? They can start their business with a needle , thread, and scissors!

with the president of the United States declaring
"I'm the King of Israel" "I am the Chosen One" "I am the 2nd coming of God" ? If you are, how would you have felt if President Obama had said these exact words while he was President?
No whataboutism. No trying to "reinterpret" what was said because it's on camera, it came from his mouth. Part of why his supporters claim to like him is that he says what he means. But this time, let's skip the step where his supporters tell us "what he really meant to say was...". Let's deal with just those 3 phrases. I am the King of Israel. I am the Chose One (with a brief turn & look to the sky) & I am the 2nd coming of God.
For some it might mean they don't feel the Donald is all there...though they risk others saying one has no training as a shrink....Personally I will take the chance of being called out...Just saying.
