Do them both ways and find out what works best. And best means the one that has you paying the most amount of money as that helps our country with the deficit.

Generally filing Joint for federal tax purposes is less tax than Married filing separate. The difference is small. However, if your state has a "progressive income tax" that is the rate goes up as the income goes up, and the state requires that you file the same way for the state as you do for the federal then filing separate may cost you a few dollars on your federal return, but save you a lot more from the state. That having been said, there are some federal benefits that require you to file jointly in order to get the benefit. There is one more consideration. If you file a joint return both parties who sign the joint return face joint and several liability for the tax. What that means is that the government can collect the tax from either one of the parties, even if one of them had no income.
