I keep reading about how the Internet, FedEx and UPS are putting a strain on the Post Office. I think I have figured out why some of that is happening. It is the first of the month. I get my utility bills the first few days of every month. I live in a dumpy little college town of about 20,000 locals and 8 or 10 thousand college students. . . . . say 35,000 people within the "metropolitan shopping area". I understand the Post Office has some kind of cost-cutting program in place that requires them to have all the sorting equipment in a few "big" Post Offices rather than each location do it's own sorting. My utility bills, and all the other mail I get from the local area always come with a postmark from a town with a bigger Post Office, even though the mail actually originates here, and the dated correspoindence inside is always 2 or 3 days old. When I send something to East Podunk a thousand miles away that system might be a cost cutter, but for someone to go to the Post Office to drop a letter in the "Local" slot 20 feet from my own box, and have that letter sacked up and sent somewhere else to be sorted so it can be sacked up again and sent back here to be put in my box seems to me to be an absolute waste. Besides the slots marked "Local" inside the Post Office, there are street side mail boxes all over town. At each set of boxes there is always one marked "Local". I wonder why they have a "Local" box if all the mail is going to some other town anyway just to sorted and be sent back here to be put in my box. I'd like to say the Postal Workers Union may have a hand in it, but who am I? It sure seems to me like there are a lot of trucks, carrying a lot of mail unnecessarily to places for other people to handle that could be handled locally, and a lot more efficiently. Any thoughts?

My local mail doesn't do that? I'm not sure why your does? Are you certain its coming from your town location? My utility bills don't come from my town specifically (I live in a small town... maybe larger places have several different postal codes in one town/city?)...

What's killing the USPS is the Union, and retiree pensions and benefits. Pure and simple.
