We are so awesome!!
But really. The last two weeks have just sucked and now they say 12-18 inches of snow in our forecast in the next few days.

Congratulations?
Or maybe you have my deepest sympathies. You decide.

Congrats! I'm not sure how Michigan even got as high as 2nd place. They must include the UP-- where no one lives.
(Ok, a few people live there, but not many.)
I guess the Red Wings are really sucking lately?
But North Dakota is less shitty? Really?

One of the numerous reasons my mother, having grown up there, wanted to leave North Dakota once she finished college, was the state's winter weather.
Minnesota may be the winner this year, but from what I heard North Dakota was a winterish hell way back when.

My brother who now lives in Iowa, used to live in North Dakota. The thing he misses most about winter there is how calm and collected everyone was about snow. No hysteria, no desperate runs for bread, milk, toilet paper or booze. Just business as usual.

I grew up in Iowa and am now back living in Iowa. See we are #11.
I don't see hysteria when it snows here. Didn't growing up and don't now.
I do wish we had gotten all the snow days they get today. I think we had 1 during my 3 years of high school.
I do realize that where I live now is the largest by area school district in the state and most of it is gravel roads that are hilly and curvy. Buses have a difficult time getting through on those roads.
I remember my parents plugging in their batteries overnight in the garage. I have never done that.

I don't think I've ever seen the stores here have people running in and emptying the shelves of bread or whatever else people think they need before a storm. Our favorite vintage of wine was out of stock before the storms last week, though. That really sucked. We had to get the cabernet sauvignon instead. Just not the same.

I don't know where we ended up but my guess is pretty close to Hawaii. Doing a happy dance for our beloved Loser status.

You know what’s hard to believe?
All of my ancestors; every single one, chose to emigrate to Minnesota. (Good YMers, they were. Grabbing up land under the Homestead Act.)
One could call Minnesota a frigid hell hole. But, that’s kind of contradictory. Many Minnesotans might consider hell to be a tropical vacation from a Minnesota January.

I'm awed and inspired by Minnesota's well-deserved win in this coveted title challenge. I know Maryland (where I now live) will never begin to come close in any weather-related race, and Massachusetts (where I grew up) will place proudly but always cede to the true masters, but Wisconsin (where I was born) will surely beat the pants of Minnesota at some point in the future.

I will just say that I love Alabama. What could be better than 4 seasons in one week? Sometimes it is in one day!

NY is #20!? WTF? I’d protest but I’m too Fucking cold, I can’t move after my last fall on the ice, and I’m too busy preparing for another blizzard on Tuesday.
Fuckers.

We may have seven days of winter sunshine a year but the lakes do warm us up. We definitely don't have the wind.
I think that we placed second because there are more of us, and we're whinier.

SW MN would strongly disagree with you on the "no wind" statement! The I90 corridor is brutal.

Babe, I'm writing from Michigan, where we have much less wind than a whole lot of other places. I've been to some of those places, sometimes even in winter, and I know that we have it good as far as wind is concerned.
I think that we placed second because there are lots of us and we voted for ourselves. Or maybe the clouds have something to do with it. It's so cloudy here in the winter that most of us slip into a funk every winter and completely lose track of how long it actually lasts.

That also shows how arbitrary their criteria are, because I absolutely despise wind. Plus, believe it or not, my husband hates the sun in the winter. He's prone to headaches/migraines, and the angle of the sun in the winter is much more aggravating as it gets right in your eyes. It's really bright on the snow, too, if there is any.

My bad. I'm still defending our title over North Dakota.

Well, to be fair, it really sounds like it was just a bunch of guy in a bar throwing together a list over some beers.

I've always said it's a given I'm going to hell when I die but not the burning fire hell. I'll be sent to Bismarck, ND in the winter time as punishment.
Do I need to change that to Minnesota??

I need to go find this list. Also wondering where Montana ranked. Because it, along with the Dakotas and Wyoming, don't even have sports teams to follow in the winter....

I had neighbors who had lived in Casper WY before husband got a promotion to CO. They were so happy to be out of WY. I don't know how anybody stays sane in WY. SD and ND are places where I could not live. I had a job offer in ND when I was young and turned it down. After this winter, I am not enjoying Iowa at all either.

You want to know how messed up living in Minnesota makes you? I just had a 10 minute discussion in the parking lot with a co-worker over how nice and warm out it is today. The current real feel is 16 degrees. Yes- we stood outside in 16 degree weather and chatted about how warm it was and then complained about the forecasted 6 to 10 more inches of snow we are supposed to get tonight. Shoveled the 3 inches plus of snow off my driveway last night in a sweatshirt and chatted with the neighbor about how at least it was decent weather to shovel in and not that gross -25 when we had to shovel last Monday.
That's what living in the state with the worst winters does to you. You are happy when it's a balmy 16 degrees outside.
True story- when I lived in Alaska I'd come home to visit and all of my relatives and friends would point out "you live in Alaska? You know it's colder in Minnesota right?" I'm still not sure why they were so proud of that.
