Being the prolific reader that I am, the new 'pay wall' at the New York Times website is not working out for me. What happens is that after 20 free articles, you are forwarded to a sign-up page for a subscription if you want to continue. They want $15-20/month depending on what other access you get (smartphone or tablet.)
I have been substituting with cnnmoney for financial news, and brownstoner and curbed for my real estate fix. Does anyone read any other sites that have a good general news section - for free?

I bought the news junkie app for around $4 I think. It has a ton of newspapers and sites on it.

I'm having the same issue. Besides CNN Money, I also like CBS Money for financial news. I may break down and just subscribe to the NYT, however....

Interesting, I would have thought $15 to $20 a month would turn off a lot of potential subscribers.

I can't imagine replacing the NYT. They make mistakes like all newspapers do, and their editorial pages have slipped in the last few years I believe, but they are still the 'newspaper of record' and such a huge part for my understanding of domestic and international news.
That said, I am 26 and if feels so wrong to pay for a newspaper...

reader - are you so young that you have never paid for a newspaper? I am 25 and I have never paid for a newspaper except when I was in college and my business professors required that we all got a subscription to the WSJ (as student we got it at a discount). Now I read the free articles on WSJ CNN.com CNNmoney.com CBSMoney Smartmoney And some free articles on NYtimes

The first thing I did when I got an apartment after college - in January 1975 - was to subscribe to the local daily newspaper. I've been getting it ever since. I can't imagine not getting it. I do read lots of news articles online now, but they don't replace my newspaper.

I have been struggling with this too.
I've basically decided to try to live within the 20-article limit by only reading the weekend edition. If that doesn't work I will probably bite the bullet and subscribe. This is also painful because I am a print journalist, and the fact that so many people can't imagine paying for content is why I've reincarnated myself as an ESL teacher.

I'm 31, I've paid for a newspaper subscription before. Actually, back when I was 18 and a journalism major at NYU (my first major lol,) we had a discounted student rate for the Times. They were always late delivering it because I live on the outskirts of Queens. I have also paid for WWD when I was at FIT. I currently pay $15/year for a subscription to the local paper, The Wave.
Back in journalism class I remember them saying that subscriptions don't pay the bills, ads do. This was also true when we discussed magazines and websites in one of my advertising classes. I have put up with increasingly intrusive ads from online sites, including the Times, and I always make sure to click on a few if they're relevant.
I haven't visited the site since the switchover; last month I read over 300 articles there. I'd hit the wall in one day - two maybe? I changed my homepage at home, and removed it from my favorites at work.

drudgereport - links to news sources all across the world. Said to have conservative slant but I end up going to all the sites that this site links to, including those listed above.

To actually answer the question, for those who are open to reading a foreign news source, I suggest The Guardian. But it's not the NYT.

I got a Twitter account and then "followed" all of the news organizations. This works like a constant newsfeed of information.
