I'll probably do mine next month since I'm not likely to get anything back. Has anyone used Credit Karma? They keep sending me emails about how it's free. The other sites that claim to be free is only for federal. Each state is $30 to file and I live and work in two different states. I tried credit karma last year and gave up. When I put in all my info, it doubled my income for the state and I couldn’t figure how to fix it so I gave up.

I just didn't want to pay for it when I'm probably going to owe anyway.

What software did you use? I’ve used both Turbo Tax and Tax Act to do my nephew’s federal taxes, let it do his state taxes, then copied the form by hand when I couldn’t print it out.

I can't remember if I have posted in this thread or not, so my estimates may be repeat content. I sent all my stuff in to my accountant about a month ago, after running my numbers through a few different online calculators. according to those, I would either owe the feds about $30 or get back about $1200. that's quite the swing. so imagine my horror when I heard back from the college kids at the office that the CPA wanted to go over some numbers with me this morning. for 2018, I am going to owe the feds all of $3. I can absolutely live with that.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, so I can only go off what she told me this am - there was an almost $4000 difference in withholdings, with no change to my declarations. how much of that is the changes to tax law, and how much is related to the almost $30k income cut (had I stayed the whole year at the job I just left), I don't know. I can post more exact numbers when I get my return back in the mail. I did ask about this year, since my salary at my new job is the highest I've ever received, with bonuses expected to bring it even higher. since I'm okay with not giving an interest-free loan to the gov't, I'm okay keeping my withholdings where they are. I'm in the middle of paying shit off, so it's not like I'm banking on getting that windfall to pay for something fun.

Does I finally got off my ass and took them in to my tax guy count? I had some grand delusion that I would do them myself. I forgot about the SSDI. Fuck that. Off they went.

We got the ugly news this week. We owe $1,303 fed tax, will need to make a $330 2019 first quarter payment, and increase our withholding up $200 a month for the rest of the year to keep from owing as much next year. This is up from $435 for 2017 and $861 for 2016. Same income, just lost a LOT of deductions. But I'm actually doing the happy dance because my attempt at using an online guesstimator showed us owing $3,000.
At least next year I will have company in my misery when my friend who cashed out his entire IRA because "someone told me it was tax-free after 65" discovers what that does to his tax bracket. And that his new home in Colorado comes with state income tax. And that moving expenses are (1) no longer deductible and (2) were NEVER deductible for retirees. Sometimes stupid is fun to watch

We're done! Owed the Feds $7,246 after making $6,500 IRA contribution for DH. That includes a $288 penalty for failing to file estimated taxes which my CPA is paying. I called her last year when we got a $100k installment payment for the condo because I couldn't believe I didn't owe any taxes on the installment. She said "no" but it and a few other adjustments made us owe $$$. Owed CA $429 Also paid 1st and 2nd ES payments to the Feds $1420 total and CA $1860 since we're getting another $100k installment. With my dad's situation I'm concerned that I will flake on #2 even if I put it on my calendar. I'll make #3&4 when I get the payment in July. I'm feeling poor but relieved we're done!

I wrote a total of $7,000 in checks between Federal and State, 2018 underpayment and 2019 Q1 Estimated. Planning to mail them next week- no need to give the gummint money any earlier than I have to, but I don't want to be one of those people at the Post Office at 11:59 PM on the latest possible day, either.

$2400 back. I was expecting a refund because we bought a plug-in vehicle in November and didn't take the $7500 credit into account until we had the car in hand. Overall taxes $45k this year vs $65k last year. Partially attributable to the $7500 credit and a bit to a 3% reduction in income year-to-year, but mostly the Trump tax cuts. Doesn't mean I think they were a good idea for the nation, but they were good for me.
The most exasperating part? I spent a couple hours yesterday valuating the Goodwill donations from earlier in the year - at the time I had just taken pictures and listed the items/conditions. My result? $23,967 in itemized deductions. It actually would have been exactly $24,000 but one of the donations I had figured up at $523, so I dropped it to $490 since I didn't have the purchase price on all those old clothes.

Between the feds and the state I get to pay in $24K. Am I the winner? Believe it or not I'm actually happy with this amount as I was expecting worse. We sold a rental property and it was hard to guess what we'd end up owing when paired with the Trump changes too.

Between federal and state we owe about $2700. Considering how much 1099 work DH did last year, I’m relieved. I was expecting worse. Or at least prepared for worse. I don’t know how all of the numbers compared to last year as I forgot to pick them up today. Hoping I remember to do it tomorrow.

Well, between the state and feds we are getting 10K back. 8K+ is from the feds. Our state refund only increased about $100 from last year. Our federal refund doubled, I think because of the refundable CTC.
And it wasn't like our income was even that low...I don't have our taxes in front of me yet, but ballpark figure our gross was 90K.
So weird. We're still a have. We've crossed 750K threshold for net worth, now..actually.
I don't know what, exactly, other than the number of kids we have makes us a "have not." But, I have to say despite "winning" under the new tax code, I'm not swayed to change my voting habits....

Not surprised you get a big refund with 4 kids. Surprised you wait until almost the last minute to file to get it though! I'm like "GIVE ME THE MONEY NOW!"

Too much else going on to make taxes a huge priority. Mostly, it was the paperwork for getting my SE income all together. That really fell by the wayside this past year. I was like "I have to get on track for 2019..." and that lasted for roughly 4 minutes..and it's back to "rather would watch tv"

I tell myself I am going to be more organized every year! I am going on extension for sure. In-laws were here to sign their tax return. Asked DS for a form 1098-E, and increased his refund $439. I only realized credit was available from a comment here. DD showed up Friday, completed her Fed, Filed it, had her sign State to be mailed, and bugged her to come up with W-2 from 2017 so I can mail last year’s state. $68 refund, $35 e-filing fee-I figured it was better to mail it.

I mailed my taxes off on Wednesday, just as the snow started flying (we got about 9" of the heavy stuff). I'm getting a sizable refund because I had planned on selling some stock, then changed my mind. I used a tax calculator on the internet to see how my taxes would be if I had filed Single this year (since my DH passed away in 2018, this is my last year of filing jointly). My federal tax liability would have been about $8,900 instead of $3,200. Sigh.

I need to file state for DS and DD State.
I went to state website to make sure I don’t need to send copy of federal return, & realized I can e-file state for free on their website (Turbo Tax Charges $35)

Did my taxes online today. I owe everyone. I owe fed $380. I owe KS $400. I owe MO $40. It's not as bad as it could have been, but I was hoping to at least break even. So much for that.

My federal tax liability would have been about $8,900 instead of $3,200. Sigh. You have my deepest sympathy- both on the sudden loss of your DH last year AND the future tax consequences. I filed Single for the first time for 2017 since DH died in 2016. All the rejoicing over the giant new standard deduction meant less to many Singles since it's half that for Singles. Nearly all the brackets, thresholds, etc. are doubled or halved for Singles (whichever works to our disadvantage!). It would be nice if our expenses halved, but the mortgage, rent, property taxes, etc. don't reduce for a one-person household. I'm just grateful I live in a state where the taxes are low enough that I don't run up against the SALT limitation. To get back to the OT- last week I sent out a total of $7K in checks- State and Federal amounts due, plus State and Federal Q1 Estimates (revised upward again. ) I had everything prepared well ahead of time but saw no reason to send them my money too early.
