I'm very jaded too, no problem NoNamePerson ! But I also think that the US tax deduction for donated items helps to fuel spending/the economy but also fills up landfills. I think it is good to be mindful of one's spending, but that's just my opinion. The cycle and process of consumption is mindboggling when you ponder it. Between the advertising, the creating of the products, the shipping of them (and all the cellophane and cardboard wrappings that go with that), the bags and tissue paper that are used when they're bought, and all the transportation in between. It's . My store has customers that spend thousands every month.

Welcome paynointerest ! Very happy to see you here! One thing I do (not much "stuff" to declutter these days) is put our clothing donations into a bin that RECYCLES old fabric. That way if our clothes don't interest them (and I'm guessing they won't) at least hopefully the fabric will be recycled.
ETA: paynointerest you sound very organized already, but if you want to do more, I would suggest friending Peter Walsh on FB (or looking at tcu2003 's posts here, she has been kind enough to post them all.) Every year he does a January 31 Day challenge, just 10 min per day.

This week- pharmacy - Shitepile
- learn lines (ongoing) - Quickbooks (ongoing) - mark 8 retakes (maybe this weekend) I am dreading going back to work after this long break. I always get terrible "stage fright" even though I've been doing this for years. I am also dreading going back to rehearsals too now that I'm back at work, although I always have fun when I'm there. Just 5 more weeks and the play will be over!!!

Dropped off 25 magazines at the local assisted living home today and have recycled 70 pieces of paper. Ugh, I feel like this week I put too many ambitious goals on my to do list... hoping to finish the pictures and writing today, then work on bulbs Monday or Tuesday.
1 Finish chapters 4-6 of my book - in the middle of chapter 5 2 Write down quotes from last year’s books
3 Take donation to goodwill - Monday task 4 Cull magazines 5 Finish scanning loose pictures - working on it now 6 Touch up front door paint 7 Begin planting bulbs

Peter Walsh’s 31 Days to Get Organized Challenge:
Day 1 -Set up a donation bin. And, everyone in your house finds 5 items to place in the bin.
Day 2 - Shoes. Gather all of your shoes up from your closet. If they have dust on them, don’t fit, etc, put them in your donate bin. Only keep shoes you love, wear, and that fit you well.
Day 3 - Home Safety. Being organized is not just about closets and files, it's also about ensuring the best life for you and your family. The New Year is a great time to check smoke detectors in your home. Make this your 10 minute challenge for the day and make your family a little safer in the process!
Day 4 - This year’s challenge Mantra is “No more later” aka stop procrastinating. Today's challenge is to contact someone, preferably by phone, that you’ve been putting off. It could be a friend, family member, for more coworker, etc, but do it today!
Day 5 - The Junk Drawer.
Day 6 - Holiday Decorations. The holidays are over and it's time for the decorations to come down.
Day 7 - Bathroom cabinets! Pick one bathroom cabinet, and get rid of anything too old, expired or you don’t use, and put everything away in its proper space.
Day 8 - Plastic Food Storage Containers.
Day 9 - Hanging Clothes. In his video, he says that anything that has dust on it needs to go.
Day 10 - the mail. If you have mail pretty much all over your house then today's the day we're going to get that sorted out.
Day 11 - under the sink.
Day 12 - Clear out old magazines, catalogs, flyers, etc.
Day 13 - Gift wrap
My prediction for Day 14 of #31Days2GetOrganized is that you will either find this challenge a breeze or it will totally gross you out. There's generally very little in between when it comes to cleaning out the space underneath your bed. So, were you able to get this one done in a couple of minutes or were you close to needing some smelling salts before it was over?? I can't wait to hear! #UnderTheBed #LetItGo #ItsAllTooMuch

I tossed more CDs that will go out tonight.
I feel like I'm catching a cold, but I'd like to go through the kitchen cabinet with all the plastic containers I don't use and toss most of them.
I also have a phone call in to my car insurance agent. My insurance still shows there is a lien holder and the car is paid off.

Speaking of Goodwill mentioned on the prior page, I went there with a few things to donate on behalf of my mother Saturday. Man they were busy! It was the place to be. As mentioned in a prior post, she is downsizing to prepare for a move. Though she still has way too much stuff, IMO (apparently there is not one but TWO walk-in closets upstairs full of clothes), she had been doing a fantastic job over XX amount of years ridding of stuff. The exterior storage closet which was "filled so much things came falling out" when opening the door a few years ago is now completely empty. I am so proud of her! When I was at her house Saturday, there were at least 50 boxes taped up and ready to go. She was coming across things like expired tea and mac and cheese boxes from when her granddaughters were young. Bottom line: It motivated me to continue scrutinizing every item I own, starting with my home office desk and closet. Sunday: 3 loads of laundry Kept up with dishes Made homemade pasta sauce and orange mulled wine Prepped eggs for the week, made tea, and prepped lasagna ingredients for today's Crock Pot meal
Pulled 2009-2011 tax docs to shred at the office Did my toes and Amoped my feet Meal plans for the week

Woke up from nap with a full blown cold. I won't be going through the plastic stuff today.
I did rid myself of moderating a Beatles Yahoo group. I've been a member of the group for at least 15 years, maybe 20 years. It pretty well stopped having messages when torrenting started so the group moderator decided to do away with the group. Some people wanted the group to stay alive. All messages had to be approved so he asked for volunteers and three of us stepped up.
It has come down to me doing all of the approving of messages. The owner is no longer recognized by Yahoo and can't sign in. For some reason, since just before Christmas, the place got nuts again. I have approved over 750 messages since that started. I was doing it twice a day and people were complaining that they couldn't carry on "conversations" because of the time delay. I am not interested in the bootlegs and trading any more. The owner of the group got hold of me and told me he can't sign in and asked what I wanted to do. I said I quit. He sent out a message to that effect and people started begging for him to keep the group alive. Well, he can't make anyone a moderator and neither can I.
I left the group this morning.
I moderate another group on Yahoo and it's the same situation. I'm the only one around. I can't remember the last time it has had a message that needed to be approved. I do have to approve new members. Somehow people find the group about once a year. That one is easy to moderate. If it suddenly goes nuts again, I will leave that group also.

TheOtherMe , good for you for leaving the group. One of the best things I did for myself last year and year prior was to leave many "volunteer" type projects. Moderating online groups are more stressful than they seem outside looking in, IMO. Side note: Speaking of Beatles, 4 of my mom's boxes contain her record albums. She indicated there are two unopened albums, one of which is a Beatles selection. I encouraged her to go to the local record store to see if they'd make her an offer. She said she researched it online and it had a price tag of $30.

I may be petty but I got ticked because the last few messages that came through were thanking the owner. Uh, he said I've been doing all the work but nobody thanked me.
$30 is more than she would have paid for it. All of my original albums are well played. I do sill have all of my vinyl and, at this point, it is not on the purge list.
I took the trash and recycling out early as freezing drizzle is expected and I don't want to fall on the driveway later this evening.

It's about the new Soma Innofit bra-fit gadget. When I dropped the books off, I picked up three that I'd been wanting so win, win. I may tackle the boxes on the bookcase tomorrow.

Feel better TheOtherMe . I'm glad you made your life easier today. I've been struggling to understand how I'm still teaching 3.5 days/week even though I'm doing 4.5h/week less than last semester. I finally figured out it's because I refused to start at 8 am on the mornings after rehearsal. I generally worked from 8-5.30 at Job 1 (my main job). Now I'm working from 9.30-4. So DUH, no surprise that I have to go in just as many days!
I know this sounds really dumb but it took me a while to figure it out. Job 3 asked me to work a Sat in April. Job 3 usually starts in May. I LOATHE working Saturdays but I lost a class at Job 1 so I accepted.

Today has been pretty productive. I got 3 gifts in the mail, picked up a check at the post office (magazine always sends to my PO box), picked up another writing gig at 3x my normal rate, went to Costco for some staples and filled the car up with gas. Not too much done around the house yet but it's still early. It's been raining on and off so I haven't done the bulbs or front door paint touch ups but overall feeling good about today.

I'll be sending a number of board games to my brother and his family so that will get more stuff out of the house.
Isn't it funny how some things have been sitting in their spots for so long that you don't even think of them as clutter? They're just part of the decor or something.

Yes and then when it hits me that it's clutter, it has to go NOW.

Making progress. I have 53 items in the back of my car to go to MRCI (local thrift store that benefits the developmentally disabled population). That'll bring my donation total to 195/2019. I also hauled 6 large cardboard boxes to recycling (they are too large for my normal recycling bin that I put out at the street on trash day). We've watched Tidying Up but between the kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects we don't have space to dedicate to building a clothes mountain so instead we've been going through like one closet, one cupboard, etc. at a time. We do have all of our clothes in our bedroom closet and dresser so they've all been gone through (except the hall coat closet) and we did go through all of the kitchen drawers and cupboards. Now we are down to doing one area at a time. The Hubs PROMISES he will have the Boy's bathroom and the kitchen completely done by Sunday night. So hopefully that will clear up some time for us to continue decluttering. I'm looking forward to him tackling his mancave. It's overflowing with Board Games and Star Wars collectibles.

The last roll of gift wrap upstairs went down to the wrapping paper bin last night. While I was down there switching laundry, I grabbed a stack of magazines for the recycle bin.
Under the bed gets cleaned regularly. I am allergic to dust so the dust bunnies face regular evictions. There's even a box of swiffer cloths in our bedroom for this purpose.
I continue with the baby steps. We have overnight guests coming in mid February so our goal is to have a better looking house by then.

I removed myself from all Yahoo groups in which I am not an active participant. Most are dormant anyway.
I do have a cold, so will be taking sudafed and vegging out today.

We don't have curb pick-up for recycling, but there are recycle bins close to DS2 soccer practice. I will get all the cardboard out of the garage today and take with us tonight to get rid of. Booked summer vacation. I still like to do photo albums - however - I am 2 years behind. Uploaded and ordered over 500 prints to Walmart and they will be delivered Friday (.09 per print, free delivery). I still have more to upload. I plan to work on it this weekend - hopefully getting a lot of snow. DH picked up a nice tool chest on wheels this past weekend. We will work in basement to continue to organize tools. 1/2 bath remodel is getting started MONDAY!!! I can't wait. I have a small dumpster coming and there will be plenty of room to get rid of a few items in the basement that cannot be donated or given away.

Iggy - my smoke detector just went out a few months ago, dang near spot on 10 years after buying this house! The replacement from Costco was about $15, internal battery that will last 10 years. I figure $1.50 per year NOT to have that thing scream at me in the middle of the night is perfectly reasonable Today I have been doing interviews for the magazine article I'm writing and catching up on emails. Boring, admin work which I hate is next on the list but at least I have finished the family photos that needed to be scanned, though I still have a box full of newspapers and paper. I posted one picture from 1908 to Facebook which had my great-great-grandpa John and great-great-great-grandparents Theodore and Tabitha.

Have done ZERO on this list so rearranging things. This week- pharmacy - learn lines (ongoing, probably this weekend) - Quickbooks (ongoing, probably this weekend) - mark 7 retakes (probably this weekend) - Shitepile (probably this weekend) - online class spaces - photocopy account - bottle bank
Looks like it's going to be a busy weekend. I don't teach on Fridays so hopefully at least some of this will get done on Fri. Keeping up with kitchen and laundry but nothing else.

Day 15 of #31Days2GetOrganized has you back in the kitchen today. Simple exercise: Before you open its door, close your eyes and think about what an organized refrigerator might look like. Now go ahead and look and tell me how you did. Getting the fridge & freezer organized is one of those things that not only makes you feel better, it also can have serious positive effects on your and your family's eating. I look forward to hearing how you did! #Refrigerator #Freezer #Organization #ItsAllTooMuch #LetItGo

I didn't get as much done as I would have liked this week. I had the time but not the ambition. Made it to the gym twice with DH. We'll see if I can get him to go back next week. I'm really good about washing and drying laundry-not so good at putting it away. This week I did three loads-wash/dry/put away. And while I was at it I found 38 items to donate. Recycling is next week so I'm going to try to go through some more linens and see what I can add to the bag. I'm on top of most of the Peter Walsh challenges. Most were already done and just needed tweaking. I'm saving junk drawer for last. Mine is actually a small bureau in the dining room. Two drawers are completely organized...two are complete shambles. Nice about purging 38 items all at once!Slowly getting my systems back in place. Priorities this week: shred old paperwork, get caught up on my grading, research grad schools. I have been exercising more, so that's a definite positive! Do you teach? What do you want to go to grad school for?

I moderate another group on Yahoo and it's the same situation. I'm the only one around. I can't remember the last time it has had a message that needed to be approved. I do have to approve new members. Somehow people find the group about once a year. That one is easy to moderate. If it suddenly goes nuts again, I will leave that group also. I'm glad you pulled yourself out of all of those groups. However, don't even think about pulling out of this one!
Sometimes it takes awhile for that kind of stuff to click in my head too. I scrapbooked for about six years. I still have the majority of the materials, but I haven't really done anything for the last six to eight years. I cannot bring myself to get rid of all my scrapbooking stuff though. Have you ever done the printed scrapbooks? I hate for the pictures to just be living in my iCloud and dropbox accounts.

My plans for the Peter Walsh listDay 1 -Set up a donation bin. We've had this set up for years. It's a cute wire basket that sits on our washer. Day 2 - Shoes. Gather all of your shoes up from your closet. If they have dust on them, don’t fit, etc, put them in your donate bin. Only keep shoes you love, wear, and that fit you well. I actually did this early in December. DD#2 did it on or adjacent to the challenge day. Day 3 - Home Safety. Being organized is not just about closets and files, it's also about ensuring the best life for you and your family. The New Year is a great time to check smoke detectors in your home. Make this your 10 minute challenge for the day and make your family a little safer in the process! Good goal! We need to do this in our camping trailer also. Adding it to my list.Day 4 - This year’s challenge Mantra is “No more later” aka stop procrastinating. Today's challenge is to contact someone, preferably by phone, that you’ve been putting off. It could be a friend, family member, for more coworker, etc, but do it today! My sister!Day 5 - The Junk Drawer. I'm not sure what we'd consider the junk drawer. I'll have to think about this. I don't mean to sound pretentious, but for the last nine years, we've actively avoided allowing "junk drawers" to be created. It totally helps that my husband is vehemently anti-clutter.
Day 6 - Holiday Decorations. The holidays are over and it's time for the decorations to come down. Oh, yes this was done by Jan 1. The 45 inflatables did take until last Wednesday to dry out completely--but that's DH's project. Day 7 - Bathroom cabinets! Pick one bathroom cabinet, and get rid of anything too old, expired or you don’t use, and put everything away in its proper space. We do at least every other month. We did it in December, and it's on the list for January. Day 8 - Plastic Food Storage Containers. Adding this to my list. It's not out of control right now, but I certainly don't need to let it get that way before I cull them.
Day 9 - Hanging Clothes. In his video, he says that anything that has dust on it needs to go. I may have mentioned this before, but I need to go through my scarves for this challenge. Day 10 - the mail. If you have mail pretty much all over your house then today's the day we're going to get that sorted out. Yeah, I have a system here. Day 11 - under the sink. We do at least every other month. We did it in December, and it's on the list for January.
Day 12 - Clear out old magazines, catalogs, flyers, etc. I do this almost weekly in living areas of the house. However, DD hoards The Economist. She did just purge those in early December and again a bit the first week of January.
Day 13 - Gift wrap Oh yes, this is definitely an issue for me! Adding it to the list. Day 14 - space underneath your bed This is not an issue. I actually avoid having bed skirts in an attempt to not allow myself to have anything under the beds.
Day 15 of #31Days2GetOrganized has you back in the kitchen today. Simple exercise: Before you open its door, close your eyes and think about what an organized refrigerator might look like. My fridge is okay, but we do need to re-sort the inside freezer at minimum. The outside (full size) freezer is in good shape, but I still need to update the list of what we have in our possession.
