I have dined at Tennessee's Earnestine & Hazel’s Bar & Grill here in Memphis. Good food-I have no idea about the booze.

I have not tried them yet, but some locals claim a couple of them have some fairly good product, that stands up well against the conglomerate products. Then again, I cannot call any of them dive bars.....

Guess I don't know what a dive bar is. I mean, there was that one bar with its name etched on a glass? Another there was something about "... on their website ... ?" Dive bars? My dive bars were ones that you were excited when there wasn't yellow tape blocking the door on a given night.

My favorite dive bar had the best burgers I have ever tasted and the only restroom was for women. The guys just went out on the back porch. Pool was a quarter a game and beer was a buck a bottle. In 2000.

Plenty of small dive bars in Mississippi. Many are well known for small Blues bands.

You know you have walked into a dive bar when you stop a foot inside the door and have no idea if you will be more likely be beaten up if you continue in or attempt to turn and flee.

I always considered it a dive bar one that if you start to enter and didn't have a gun or knife on you they issued you one.
And I clicked on the link and didn't see some states listed so guess those states don't have dive bars or are no longer States??

Been to both the IL and WI ones they listed and while good there are about 10 dive bars in each state I like more. It’s clear they didn’t put much effort in as they listed bars in giant cities and not the sticks.

It's the sort of place that a free weekly paper might give the honorific of "best dive bar." He says that what those tastemakers consider a good divey spot is actually a highly selective, very curated take on what "low culture" is. That is to say, going to one of these nouveau dives constitutes a sort of class tourism––the illusion of authenticity without the inconvenience of having to hang out with any working-class people. What Is a Dive Bar and Why Do I Love Them?

I live in KS but can see MO from my house, so I looked at both states. I haven't been to either. The one in KS is 3 hours away. The one in MO is 4 hours away. ☹

I'm feeling ancient. We didn't used to call them "dive bars" back in the 80s and 90s. They were simply "dives".
And I stayed out of them. I preferred to spend my time and money in establishments that were a step lower, former dives that had become gay bars. Yeowza, some of my memories of those spaces are quite painful. Sadly, I'm not talking about the hangovers. Good Lord, no! I never dared get drunk in such spaces. They were interesting spaces that allowed you to meet people that you would never have met otherwise but some of the things that you saw were sorta haunting.

My favorite "dive bar" if it was one, was named "Inn the Red". Most patrons were in their early 20's, crowd was basically 50/50 men and women. Had a couple of electronic games, good pizza oven operation, and a lot of fun. Got to know the bar owner over a year or so, and he said when he started the place was a ghost town, and women came into the bar to use his unused restroom, from a popular bar across the street that was always packed. He started up conversations with some of them, and sometimes bought them a drink to keep them there, and the boyfriends soon crossed the street to find their girls, and a Dive bar was born! Place was too small to have a band.

I was a dart player back in my younger days. Metal darts, not the plastic ones. The boards that you had to do the math. League play got me to some interesting establishments.

I avoided bars with these just outside their front doors.

We hung out at the Buffet all the time in college. It closed a few years ago. Maybe someone bought it and reopened? They had a crock pot with hot dogs floating around in it. They were necessary after a long night.
I have also been to the one in WI.

I hadn’t heard about the Lynnhaven Pub in Virginia Beach although it’s not far from my house. We’re going to have to try it sometime soon, although we like another bar not far away that does karaoke. DH can play pool or darts and I get to sing. Win win!
