We certainty need to cut defense spending, including the 'war on terror' ; however, reducing one thing like defense does not discount the necessity to cut all other unnecessary spending, and further more national defense is a specific item that the Federal Government is tasked with, providing for the arts and even welfare of any kind is not a power of the Federal Government, and I would contend that it would be better done at the local level.

It's founder admits federal funding is only 7% of the budget and the festival will go on without the federal funding relying on ticket sales ($60 each), sponsors, private grants, and state and local grants. But the bottom line is that we owe $14 trillion, and we are staring down both barrels of Obama's $1.67 trillion in proposed new borrowing. ALL this stuff has to go. I am surprised no one has picked up on this "sponsors, private grants, and state and local grants." This is as bad as the Federal Government's 7% contribution. Who pays for this? The state taxpayers, and to an extent all taxpayers across the country. Why? If the state or local government agency gives the grant it comes from those taxpayers. If it is a private grant from the business, it is a write off of corporate profits, thereby lowering their tax bill. Indiana, Wisconsin, are ground zero right now for the fight of waste of public money, and this is also part of the problem. If Peter (the Feds) will not pay, just have Paul (the state) pay for it.

Well, sure- I'd prefer it be private, but if Nevadans want to be stupid- at least we can isolate them, and the rest of us don't have to participate.

I see a web page showing US Federal Debt As Percent Of GDP. Am I supposed to see something different?

Yes, over time, where the jumps are, how the # go up and down... Ok. Fed debt increases and decreases as a percentage of GDP. If you're trying to make a point, feel free to let us all know what it is.
