I'd like to buy a jewelry gift for my friend. It's her 40th birthday. I'm thinking sapphire necklace or earrings. But I am open to other jewels.
I know Blue Nile, but I'm not looking for an engagement ring.
From what I've learned from these money boards-Buying jewelry from the mall isn't the best idea.
So where do you buy jewelry?
Thoughts?

Well, you bumped me so I suppose you're not too bad. I looked up ruby rings at Blue Nile. Not much at all!!!!

You can get sapphires at Blue Nile, I wouldn't rule them out. Not inexpensive though!

Are you looking for something custom made? You can google/search with something like goldsmith, gemologist (or gemology) designer and/or custom handcrafted jewelry. You'd need to research the vendors of course (to make sure they are real!) I use a designer who creates peices that are nature inspired (flowers) and who uses colored stones (jems). Not sure I can/should post a link to his page... You might want to research sapphires so you get a feel for the colors(prices), cuts(prices), current styles(prices) versus dated styles(prices). I think you need to consider your price range - if it's a couple of hundred dollars then maybe the local mall jewelry store isn't too bad of an idea. Or maybe stop in to a local jewelry store that doesn't have a "Chain store name". In that price range you may find something nicer on the secondary market - eBay, local jeweler (if he's got previously owned peices at the lower end of the price scale), maybe even a pawn shop that deals only with jewelry.

I bought my wife's engagement ring and our wedding bands at whiteflash.com. I'm not sure what they have for regular jewelry, however the service was great and pieces we bought were beautiful. They have similar prices to bluenile.

I've always liked Ross-Simons. I also read about a site called idonowidont.com ("I Do, Now I Don't") for people to sell jewelry from previous relationships. They actually certify the pieces, so it's not as chancy as buying on e-Bay. (I've had fine experiences buying jewelry on e-Bay but have never bought anything major there.) The selection is limited but you might find something you like. It includes traditional engagement rings but many other pieces.
