Trump is a "disrupter", and American foreign policy is in disarray right now.  Our goals are muddled, our allies are alienated, we have no clear policy on Latin America, let alone Venezuela (in fact we made vague threats against them, giving the Russians some dubious cover if they choose to go there).

The Russians did not prefer Trump because they "like" him or necessarily want to "get along with" the United States.  They want to further their own goals and increase their own power and prestige, which they will do with or against the US.  Venezuela, as a major oil producer, is a natural economic ally of the Russians if they can coordinate their energy export policy.  Having V fall apart in economic disarray as they are now is a potentially destabilizing factor for Russian economic strategy.  Venezuela, as an anti-American state in Latin America is a tempting plum for Russia to prop up and stabilize if they can.

Putin does not want nuclear war with the US, this is all posturing.

I don’t know if Putin has anything on Trump but it sure is possible, if we see a one sided deal to get a couple planes out of Venezuela that gives the Russians something substantial from the US/NATO it would raise a red flag.

I don't think Trump will do much about this, specifically. He's mired in his own misery at the WH. It's not like the WH has anything like a war room anymore, it's just DT winging it. Just like he ran his business, just his big brain.

It will fall to the House and Senate to come up with a plan, and that's scary as shit. Hopefully, they can come together with a joint sense of standing against our enemy, and figure out what they want to do in a bi-partisan way.  We're not going to be able to rely on our old allies. Not only are they not fans of Trump, they have their own shit to handle - Britain is mired in a Brexit swamp, and Macron has to figure out how to keep the radicals from burning down the capital. Germany is in the process of replacing Merkel. Canada is getting crap from China for holding one of their most prominent citizens. We'll have to do this on our own, and hopefully, calmer heads will prevail. That's about all we can hope for.
