Hello. Excess Roth IRA contributions were returned with Form 1099-R, which noted the taxable amount in box 2A. I entered this form in TurboTax and the software recognizes the entire distribution in the Income Summary. However, no amounts are listed on form 1040 lines 15a and 15b; the taxable amount on the 1099-R is several thousand dollars.
I reviewed the exceptions for these lines in the IRS Instructions for the form. Exception 2(4) seems to be applicable. Instructions for Exception 2 state to enter the taxable amount. Why would TurboTax think this shouldn't be entered? I have to believe that TT is smarter than me about this.
thanks!

the "earnings" on an excess Roth contribution are subject to income tax and should appear as taxable income on page one of the 1040.... you may want to contact the software developer to find out what box or question you answered incorrectly....
