Demands Amazon pay for resident's rent and "good healthcare" for residents! from the article: "Has the company promised to hire in the existing community?" she tweeted. "What's the quality of jobs ... how many are promised?" "Displacement is not community development," she wrote. "Shuffling working class people out of a community does not improve their quality of life." Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, contended the company should offer "good healthcare, living wages, (and) affordable rent" to members of the community. "Corporations that offer none of those things should be met w/ skepticism." www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/ocasio-cortez-blasts-tax-breaks-for-amazon-says-hq2-will-displace-the-working-class/ar-BBPEJ6z?li=BBnb7K

Well, since Amazon is known for paying shit, resulting in their employees being eligible for food stamps and medicaid, she has a point. Walmart is another offender.
Are they $15 an hour warehouse jobs, or are they good jobs?

Are they $15 an hour warehouse jobs, or are they good jobs? Most are $100,000 a year jobs. Virginia is listing them in the $150,000 range. The problem is the people living in the neighborhood are not necessarily equipped to take these jobs, although One would assume there has to be plenty of clerk entry level jobs also.

Gotta love an avowed Socialist. Elections have consequences. Remember when virtually every state in the Union (the lower 48) had at least one city from every state that seeked these jobs? NYC is happy to have these tech jobs. The taxes and revenue received from these workers every year makes it a win for the city in the long term. I know Indianapolis and Nashville as well as Atlanta love the idea of winning them over.

The jobs should be offered to people in the nieghbourhood. Poor people shouldn't be forced out of their neighbourhoods due to gentrification, and masses of Amazon workers moving in. I think corporations have a certain duty to do the right thing. Many do, and those are the corporations I support.

They are looking for professional techies fro the most part. She wants the residents to have their healthcare and rent paid by Amazon. She did not say for the employees they hire from the hood. I guess you will not be buying anything on Amazon from now on

Surprised they picked this area for the partial headquarters. Amazon said quality of life and living conditions were important issues to make the location pick. Everyone in NYC complains about subway or roadway congestion, and NYC has a high cost of living for rent or home ownership.

Again, show us where she says she wants Amazon to pay for residents' rent.

She may or may not have points, but she's not at the appropriate level of government to do anything about it/them. She's a Representative to the federal Congress, not a state (or city, which might just be the most appropriate) representative. I know she wants to fight for her constituents, but she's pretty much already been bypassed in this deal. NYC gave Amazon the bid quite a while ago. There wasn't a lot of commotion from Queens at that time that I remember. Maybe some of the locals will know differently? Queens should have shot it down before NYC made the bid if they thought it was bad for their borough.

Again, show us where she says she wants Amazon to pay for residents' rent. She said the COMPANY should provide affordable rent...how do companies provide affordable rent to people? Ya gotta love liberals. They complain about wanting "good jobs that pay a living wage" yet when a company does that then they complain about rising rents and gentrification. What a bunch of assholes...

I never knew it was quite this much. Wow. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo downplayed the $1.5 billion in tax credits and $1.2 billion in tax breaks given to Amazon in return for the company basing its new headquarters in New York City, claiming it, “Cost us nothing.” “This is a big money-maker for us — costs us nothing, nada, niente,” claimed Cuomo during a press conference. “We make money doing this.” Despite attempting to downplay the deal, Amazon is reportedly receiving “$2.5 billion in taxpayer subsidies,” including “$1.525 billion in tax credits and construction grants,” and “$1.28 billion in tax breaks.” <snip> “Hate to admit it, but Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a very good point,” declared Carlson. “That’s the only time I’ve ever agreed with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez… But it’s hard to argue with the internal logic. The richest man in the world just got $2 billion in taxpayer subsidies. How does that work?” www.newsday.com/business/amazon-hq2-tax-break-benefit-1.23380636www.breitbart.com/tech/2018/11/14/costs-us-nothing-new-york-gov-cuomo-downplays-1-5-billion-payout-to-amazon/

If the HQ moves there, then they will still get no tax revenue from the company (for a while), but there will be thousands of employees getting paid salaries, which then get taxed. So the company is providing large amounts of taxes via payrolll even though the company itself is not paying taxes (again, for a while). If the people against this type of deal can find an employer who will build on that plot of land, provide thousands of high-paying jobs, and is willing to pay the taxes Amazon is not, then I'm sure everyone would be interested in hearing about it!

Cotez is as important as a fart in a windstorm , as my Daddy would say "Cotez" may not be important, but Cortez is the Representative-elect for New York's 14th congressional district, as well as the youngest woman ever elected to the US House of Representatives. She's 28 years old.
