Never forget! is the new phrase to give to a veteran, instead of the "thank you for your service. I felt bad today, because I told a veteran "thank you for your service" this morning, and as a veteran, I prefer the new phrase.......
Anyway, the reason I started this thread, we lost another veteran today.
Stan Lee. I imagine some of the women here may not know him, but he served in WWII I think he was 95 years old. What he is best known for is Marvel Comics and his glorious imagination. Some might remember him for appearances on "The Big Bang Theory" where he portrayed himself.
Stan Lee, NEVER FORGET!
EXCELIOR!

We only like romcoms and musicals. Anything more than that just stresses our itty bitty fluff filled heads.

I read Marvel comics too. DH is a huge fan, so of course I know Stan Lee. And, considering what great superhero movies have been produced in recent years, I'm sure most of the ladies here know at least SOME of the characters.

Every female I know knows who he is. Except maybe my anti super hero friend.

I might not have been the one reading the comics, but I've bought my fair share of them & sat thru many discussions about Stan Lee's genius & his characters. One doesn't have to be a fan or have a dick to know who he was.

In the 60s, I was reading Superman comics, not Archie, Betty and Veronica. Superhero comics were my favourite. I was intrigued how red and green Kryptonite affected him.

Good golly, VB! You sure put your foot in it this time! I'm 76 and I'm very well aware who Stan Lee was and very well aware of his legacy. Thinking women wouldn't know who Stan Lee was is like thinking we wouldn't know who Gene Roddenberry was! At least for me, I was far more aware of Stan Lee's super-heroes than I ever was of Nancy Drew - and that's coming from someone who really was a young girl in the 50s! Thwaaaaaapppppp!

(Actually, my favorite commercials lately show a very competent dad doing the laundry and getting the stains out. Nothing sexier than a guy who is a master of his domain, including all his household appliances, and not just the car and the lawn mower. )
And I never liked the Archie comic books myself, I loved those horror comic books, the more lurid the better. I had to hide them from my mom. But I knew who Stan Lee was by the time the whole slew of super hero movies came along - I think you'd have to be living under a rock not to know.

Thanks Seems when I was a young un studying the comic rack at the local drugstore, more than one girl always asked why are you guys looking at those stupid Marvel comic books, while they were flipping pages on Archie and Veronica. I suppose there were a few ahem, "tomboys" that studied Marvel comic books after we left I surrender!

Good choice. I have boxes of comics in my office at home. Some of which are Marvel.
But even my 10 year old daughter knows who Stan Lee is.

I don't think I have ever read a single comic book, nor even seen many super hero movies - just not my thing. But I know who Stan Lee is. You would kinda have to live under a rock to have never heard of him.

Okay, ladies, I apoligize (except for the response about tomboys) for not realizing ALL women knowing about Stan Lee. I did not want to just turn this into a sausage fest discussion with the guys, and wanted the women to join in. Evidently I succeeded in a way I did not expect. Quite frankly, when reading these comics I, nor other boys ever discussed what an awesome guy Stan Lee was. The author was never our concern.....
Regardless it was a smallish number of kids who loved Marvel comics back then. It was a geek nerd fest back then too. I fail to remember any member of the football team in highschool ever being there looking through the Marvel comics. It was more of the AV members and science classes that were there....... P.S. I also loved some of the Disney comics, although Micky was never a big one for me.

Before the "superhero movie barrage" era, when Mr. Lee was known only by Marvel geeks (sorry, geeks), it's quite possible that the vast majority of people who knew of him were men. (It would be interesting to see how Marvel comic consumption fared between the sexes in the 20th Century. My understanding is that readership--especially the kind of fanatic readership that would lead to attendance at conventions, etc.--was overwhelmingly male.) Having said this, i) very few people--women or men--would have known about him at this time, and ii) circa 2018, now that the man has cameo'd in dozens of major motion pictures, and apparently also sitcoms, he's as well known as any other celebrity in America.

I love the X-Men series. I saw something funny last night. Hugh Jackman was on Colbert. When they offered him the part of Wolverine, he accepted and studied wolves in great detail....their mannerisms and characteristics. He wanted to get it right. On the first day of shooting, he was acting all wolf-like. The director yelled "Cut! What the hell are you doing?" "I'm acting like a wolf." "Why? Wolves have nothing to do with wolverines!" He's Australian, and never heard of wolverines.
