I think Trump has coat tails only in the deep red areas.
GOPers in the purple/blue areas would do better to campaign on the general GOP platform, focusing on successes and on issues important to their districts, rather than try to be mini-Trumps.
Of course, it's two years away, a lot can happen in two years.

Yes. Just remember some of the potential Presidential candidates should start running ads for 2020 at the end of this month! Two more years of a Trump Presidency with a democrat majority in the House is about 350 years in dog lives.

The pushing and shoving on the Dem side has already begun, with wanna be candidates out making the rounds of the midterm rallies. It will end up being between a progressive and an old school dem, probably.
I'm going to be interested to see if Trump gets a significant challenger from his party. There are a lot of appealing younger GOPers eager to step forward and run against him, I'm sure. It will probably depend on Trump's popularity a year or so from now, as you say, that would be about 175 years in dog years. Plenty to go really good or really bad (with Trump, there never seems to be a boring middle ground).

... I'm going to be interested to see if Trump gets a significant challenger from his party. ... New Hampshire Democratic primary 1968 comes to mind.
