Nope, it's not true as it is reported in that link. As always, they exaggerate: www.snopes.com/politics/taxes/realestate.aspAlso, dancinmama, this may help in the future: tinyurl.com/3ap32ygI think it is fairly clear that the website the OP links to has a little bit of an agenda that goes beyond reporting true facts ...

Okay, that makes more sense. I was googling something about estate taxes and the link to the article from the OP came up.
I am STILL shocked that I have heard nothing about this.

Also, dancinmama, this may help in the future: tinyurl.com/3ap32ygI think it is blatantly clear that the website the OP links to has a little bit of an agenda ... But using google is what got me into trouble in the first place. Okay, so it only applies to the profit over the $500,000 tax exempt gain and only on people who make over $250K a year. I wondered about the agenda thing, cuz I had never heard ANYTHING about this. I still think it's pretty sneaky.

I still think it's pretty sneaky. Yeah, that website is pretty sneaky. They say that on a $100K home purchase, $3,800 would be due in tax. That's really not only sneaky, that's lying.

Hah! I love the second website. (snopes.com) I don't make nearly enough use of that... I've used that for years. I still find myself referring to it when one of my FaceBook friends posts something preposterous and asks everyone else to re-post it. It's a fun site.

Nope, it's not true as it is reported in that link. ... On the other hand, if the mis-named "Fair" tax is ever enacted, you can expect a 30% plus federal transfer tax on the entire sales proceeds your home.

The problem with it of course is that it has nothing to do with healthcare. Most of ObamaCare is a massive pile of complicated revisions to the tax code. I've read the law, and that's a fact. The expansion of the 1099 is another great example- the requirement that any sale over $600 be reported to the government (that, btw, is an end run to close the "gun show loophole"). Maybe it was "exaggerated", but you can't say it's untrue. What is dishonest is the entire ObamaCare debate-- ObamaCare does little to reform healthcare for the uninsured, and a whole lot to raise taxes and regulate our lives.

Whether that particular conspiracy theory is accurate or not, I cannot say, but the changes in 1099 reporting requirements are about to be repealed.

Not to muddy the waters here, BUT I live in a state with a healthy sales tax (8.6% in my county). When we had our home built, 6 years ago, we had to pay sales tax on the entire cost of construction. Because building a custom home is a "service" and " services" are subject to the sales tax (plumbers, restaurants etc all have to add the sales tax) This has nothing to do with healthcare reform.
I do not support a national sales tax to replace the income tax.

Yeah, that's some interesting 'math' they came up with to spin it that way.
