Iggy - Thanks! MM - That does make sense. I wonder if the movie took many stories and combined them in that one movie. When we were in high school there was a girl a year older than me that became a professional Ballerina. She was one of the loveliest people in our school - personality wise and she was attractive. I cannot imagine her behaving like that in any way. When she showed me her big toes (black and blue with no toe nail) I couldn't believe it! That is the worst pain - toe nails being ripped off. She said most of them start coming off and they just rip them the rest of the way off. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) I admit to being in awe of her bearing that pain alone.

Maybe it was R...that'd make more sense. I really thought the dvd case said PG-13, but I very well could be wrong and I already returned it to the person that lent it to me...
Oh, and Zaire, I just read your signature...that etrade commercial is my favorite of all time! It makes me LOL every time!

Mr. Aronofsky tacks on that ballerinas should expect to sexually objectify themselves on-stage and put out for their lecherous bosses if they want a shot in the industry. A principal theme running through Black Swan is "talent is not enough".
If you get enough young dancers believing that they should accept Mr. Aronofky's view because it's "normal" and "just the way the world works", lo and behold you get reality reflecting cinema rather than cinema reflecting reality.
Black Swan is by no means the only example of Hollywood plumbing the depths of human depravity. It just happens to be one of the more celebrated examples.

A lot of professions require people to abuse their bodies. I'm not always "for" it, but there's some gray area as to where it becomes immoral. As for whether the stage director's "advice" to Portman during the movie would make her a better dancer in real life: I say ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/raspberries.png) Finally, if the direction of the movie were up to me, Portman would have gone into the boss' office and insisted that she was the most qualified. And when he assaulted her, she'd kick him in the scrotum. Again and again and again, until he was huddled on the ground puking his guts out. And then she'd calmly leave the building with a big smile on her face and the world at her doorstep. I think we can all agree she'd end up a lot better off than she did. And what's more, the young ladies watching the movie would think: that's the kind of woman I'm going to be when I grow up.

I can accept that, MM. I can't accept that "talent is not enough".
If I'm deluded--if being a highly-trained, highly-talented dancer in fact isn't enough to secure a job--then my advice to aspiring dancers is to aspire to be something else.
Portman's character makes terrible decision after terrible decision in that movie. And one of the things I can't stomach in movies is when I'm expected to empathize with a character that repeatedly makes stupid and immoral decisions.

Well if you do watch it, don't expect it to make sense. ![](http://messenger.msn.com/MMM2006-04-19_17.00/Resource/emoticons/confused_smile.gif)
