Funny thing, it is not the GOP, but the tax paying citizens.

This is an example of cops and firefighters being pressured by their unions to shift their political alliances. It has happened like this forever and it's a common tool of the unions to pressure and intimidate the people they supposedly "represent"...another reason why their day in the sun is over.

I'm more familiar with law enforcement, but I suspect firefighters and others fall into the same bag. The Police/Fire Chiefs, Sheriffs, Marshall's Service, FBI and such are more more liberal oriented than the lower level line officers, policemen, troupers, etc. Generally the Federal Employees are not only better paid, but more liberal. Polices Chiefs are better paid and more liberal. To a great degree Sheriffs' orientation is dependent on their party affiliation, but tend to be more liberal than their deputies. The more local the service, the more conservative the orientation. The more rural, the more conservative. Those are general observations I've made. It's very much like Union leader/Organizers vs. the working guy. The Leader/Organizer tends to be more liberal. Oddly enough, the rich tend to be more liberal while the "middle class" is overwhelmingly conservative and the "poor", like the "rich," tend to favor bigger government and more liberal policies. That's what is meant by the various "Majorities." [Silent, Moral, etc.] Of course one reacts when one's ox is being gored [salaries frozen, benefits cut, etc.], but the historical position of those who make a conscientious effort to be self-reliant tends to conservative and will continue to. This applies to the Military as well [although high ranking Military are quite frequently conservative] ~ This seems to apply to all public servants whose goals go farther than "what's in it for me."
