western: my favorite classic western is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. My favorite more recent western is Unforgiven. I also LOVE Dead Man.
musical: classic would be Swing Time. Love the songs and Fred & Ginger are always fun to watch. More recent releases - gotta be Chicago. I'm not usually a fan of musicals because I don't like the way they burst into song for no apparent reason. Chicago was made in such a way that was not an issue.
holiday: classic is Holiday Inn. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that movie! TCM will play it several times thru the year because it covers ALL the holidays. I love the Thanksgiving tune from that movie! Modern day - that's a tough call. I love Home for the Holidays. Have to watch it every Thanksgiving. If you've never seen it, and you have to go visit family for turkey day, this will help you get thru the drama. For Christmas, I really liked The Family Stone.
Sci Fi - classic is The Day the Earth Stood Still. Modern day release would be Total Recall or Darko
film noir - wow. There are so many in the classic category that I love: Gilda, The Maltese Falcon, Sunset Boulevard, Notorious...I can't choose!!!

western: I like "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." I just rented "Once Upon a Time in the West" but I haven't seen it yet: maybe I'll change this entry after screening.
musical: "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" or "42nd Street"
holiday: Does "Trailer Park Boys Christmas Special" count? If not, "Bad Santa" gets my vote.
sci-fi: "Metropolis" I also thought " Darko" was terrific.
film noir: "Mildred Pierce" so far. I expect to be sampling more fine noir--rarely can I decide among the good ones. I owe it to myself to see "Kiss Me Deadly" for sure.

Mildred Pierce is a good flick. Every time I watch it now, I think of the Carol Burnett spoof! Same with Rebecca, Gone With The Wind and Sunset Boulevard. Support Your Local Sheriff is a good one comedy/western. I love James Garner! in the war movie genre: classic - I love In Harms Way. Modern: Hotel Rwanda is listed in that category, and that is an AWESOME movie. That was the first time I fell absolutely in love with Don Cheadle. Schindler's List and Full Metal Jacket would also be on my list. if you like classic movies, The Mortal Storm is a must see. I saw that for the first time less than 10 years ago. It was very controversial when released because of the subject matter (it's about how personal relationships changed drastically as Hitler came to power). Man, what a great movie! classic comedy: anything with the Marx Brothers (I do prefer their first films, with Zeppo). Also Arsenic & Old Lace, The Philadelphia Story, and any of the Tracy & Hepburn films
