I've been noticing record players showing up in stores for several years now. I almost caused a pile up in books a million when I saw record player and albums in the aisle. I stopped so quickly the two people behind me almost ran over me and each other.  I saw record player one day in Super Target last year. Still have lots of albums and 45's but I also sold a bunch to a collector years ago - and no I don't regret it. I checked with kiddo to ask if he wanted them and he said no - sell and enjoy the money. 
Aretha Franklin is one of the greats. Love her music.

FWIW, you can buy a turntable for about $90 at many big-box gen-merch & groc stores. I don't know whether the remaining big-box electronics stores carry them. And if you want a turntable, dual cassette, radio and either CD or 8-track combo, you can find one in the same place for less than it cost in nominal dollars in 1984. The speakers associated with mid-1980s grey-box electronics tend to be vulnerable to mold and or corrosion. I wouldn't recommend buying them at garage sales unless you get to test the speakers.
Now back to the Queen of Soul. I spent a chunk of my life in the burbs around the D. There are great stories about Franklin answering the door in a housecoat to folks who had no idea who she was.

Aretha Franklin singing Nessun Dorma for the Pope in 2015. Franklin also stepped in at the last minute at the 1998 Grammys and sang Nessum Dorma after Luciano Pavarotti suddenly backed out due to illness.
Franklin could sing all styles of music.

Been watching on CNN all morning...Don Lemon was a great personal friend...great stories....Just heard a true story... Back in the day...many promotors, especially in the South , would try to stiff black performers from their fees after show was over...James Brown told her to insist on cash beforehand...and wouldn't perform till she received the cash...  She would put in her hand bag...as years went on, bag got nicer, bigger and was always right near her...on a chair, near her feet.... |
