You can only help to the extent that others are going to help themselves. Everyone wants "someone else" to do the work of life. If nobody will take initiative and exert effort and work in life, nothing gets done.

I guess this could apply to the government worker's work ethics, but still, unacceptable.......

Yes, institutionalized govt isn't the answer. People languish under it.

The government means well but continuing to pour money and resources into people and places that don’t improve with the help is a stupid thing to do. Reminds me of Title one schools. More resources little results. Why? Because the problem started 5 years earlier and money can’t fix that mentality. That’s why I’m a fan of Heifer international. Hand up not hand out.

This is a well known phenomenon in disaster relief. It happens all the time. If you cannot be on the ground helping in a formal way, it's best to just send cash through a reputable organization. Coping with the logistics of an incoming flood of goods, without the benefit of infrastructure, is a nightmare.
If you send money, organizations are able to funnel that into what they need, within their existing infrastructure, to help provide relief in whatever way is needed.
The economies of disaster relief mean that by sending stuff you're often harming the livelihoods of those left.

I can remember after Hurricane Camille they had to ask that people stop donating certain items since they were flooded and had no place left to store they stuff even after giving out as much as they could as fast as they could. They showed warehouses and storage bins full of clothes, etc.
People mean well with clothing donations, etc but sometimes it totally overwhelms the area in need. Hate to say but I also saw first hand some of the "crap" that the so called "helping charities/responding agencies pulled. Won't name names since it just inflames some folks!! It is a sort of catch 22 in some instances.

It's not just this one. Haiti is corrupt and incompetent as well as plenty of others. Making people dependent on handouts is never a good thing. You appreciate and take care of what you work hard for.

Crap, I forgot to add that Nixon was in office back then. I didn't realize I was in current events/political thread combo.
