Christian leaders call out the heresy......

Maybe it takes a royal wedding to offer lessons in what a good sermon sounds like.

Maybe it takes one of the world’s most elitist institutions — a monarchy, for goodness’ sake — to provide a view of Christianity rooted not in conservative cultural warfare (or unrelenting support for President Trump) but in an egalitarian love that will “let justice roll down like a mighty stream.”

And the Most Rev. Michael Curry, who preached for a royal couple and the world last Saturday, isn’t finished with us yet. On Thursday, a group of Christians will march to the White House for a candlelight vigil inspired by a declaration entitled “Reclaiming Jesus: A Confession of Faith in a Time of Crisis.”

The presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church, Curry is a prime mover of a statement suffused with a sense of urgency about “a dangerous crisis of moral and political leadership at the highest levels of our government.”

While Trump lurks behind almost every paragraph of this passionate assertion of faith, he is never mentioned. This reflects the desire of the endorsers to focus on what it means to proclaim that “Jesus is Lord.” The opening paragraph makes this clear: “We believe the soul of the nation and the integrity of faith are now at stake.”

At a time when social media and email inboxes bulge with manifestos about the dangers posed by Trump, “Reclaiming Jesus” is distinctive: Its vision contrasts sharply with the approach taken by Christians who are invoking religious arguments in apologetics for a president whose actions and policies seem antithetical to almost everything Jesus taught.

I am not enamored by a lot of so-called Christians. They have tainted what it means to be Christian.

I'll take the bait.  (If I get booted, I've got work to do around the house this weekend anyway.)     I wish more people would speak out on the topic of Christianity.

I am a practicing Christian, but am appalled at what other so-called Christians are doing.  At my church, the ladies make quilts to give out to the elderly, new babies, and the local battered women's shelter.  Our church used to run a food shelf, but now our pastor hands out gift cards instead, so those who are in need can pick out their own groceries.  The Jesus we believe in set an example that we are supposed to follow, of loving your neighbor.  I don't think some of the folks who call themselves Christian would let me in the door, even though I'm white, because I'm probably not rich enough, and I'm not willing to look down my nose at folks who have less than I do.   (Flame away.)

Some places wonder why their flock is dwindling...too many leaders are not following Jesus, and are following the almighty dollar.

I could say a lot too but won't.  Just that trump has brought out things in Christians I would have never believed.  These are the socalled good people in the community.  Most must be bigots and racist as they say nothing about the horrible things he is doing.  I still can't believe it and certainly has changed how I looked up to these people.  No more.

I'm a Christian and agree with busymom. It was crazy to me how many of my friends voted solely on one or two campaign promises and disagreed with everything else trump said/says. I asked a couple of close friends how they could rationalize that when he not only changes his mind on issues but also lies. Neither could explain it, but the one or two issues were important enough to take that risk. Meanwhile I'm left thinking he's an adulterer, racist, and going to have access to nukes. One of the christian political radio stations that i sometimes used to listen to has leaders touting him nonstop. I can't take it. Some days I'm still in disbelief.

Anyway, I know plenty of Christians who feel just like me and are appalled at what's happening in our world.

An article in the NY Times yesterday that I think is relevant to this discussion.

So, spreading the word of Jesus by those wh try to live their faith will get denied by faith leaders who are wealthy, well connected, and politically involved.
