I've read about they think the Tasmanian tiger may not actually be extinct. So much of Tasmania is uncharted scientists think it's possible a population remained hidden from humans.

We've only just barely explored the oceans, no telling what might be lurking down in the deep abysses. They think they've only discovered about half the species of animals that live there.
Not that I want to go there. I was listening to an audiobook about the largest squid species they've found, with the largest eyes on the planet (12 inches) and 30 - 40 feet long, with tentacles. Tentacles with suckers rimmed with hooks.
Surprising though that something right out in the open, visible to satellites, not deep underwater or deep in a forest got completely overlooked. Maybe people haven't ruined everything yet.
