My son started a new job around Christmas 2017. He didn't get his first paycheck until the first week of January 2018. Will he get a W2 from that employer?
Thanks!

If he did not receive a check until January of 2018, he had no income in 2017 from that employer. It is 2018 income.

A CASH basis taxpayer reports income/expense in the year it is received/paid or when he/she has unrestricted access to the income. An accrual basis taxpayer reports income and expenses when the "All Events Tests" are met.
