My mother (b. 1951) has been telling me this since I was little. She damaged her hearing because of blasting the radio, therefore we weren't allowed to listen to music.

Well, the current generation(S) are doing the same thing, only with ear phones. Our bodies weren't made for this kind of treatment.

So you are saying that my employees need to be grateful to me since I don’t allow radios or ear buds/headphones on the job!😀

I'm deaf as a post, and have a hearing aid.
I went to a LOT of concerts. Listened to a LOT of music blaring through my headphones.

I don't wear them around the house though. And I have one tv that the audio goes up to 100 on it...I can hear it from about 75 on up depending on who is talking.

I have been wearing hearing aids since I was 4 (now a cochlear implant since 2013). In my early 20s, I worked in a retail store. I once had a teenage customer ask me if I also lost my hearing because of listening to music too loud. I was shocked that such a young person lost her hearing that way, because the reason for the loss was something I could never fathom doing! I told her my hearing loss was from birth.

I would think your neighbors are happy you are not a night person.

A lot of the bars had live music when I was a young adult, & the speakers used to be right next to the seating area. So, that didn't do my hearing a lot of good.
I don't expect today's generation of young adults to have great hearing as they get older, either. I see a lot of headphone use, and even at the movies they blare the sound (too loud even for me).

This really hits home; DH had poor hearing and tinnitus from working near aircraft in the 1960s without proper protection. My brother, who worked in chemical factories but is now retired, also has tinnitus. Dad, age 87, worked in steel mills most of his career and has tried hearing aids that cost as much as $25,000 (fortunately he was able to return them) with no success.
Its sad that younger people think hearing is an old person's problem; I cringe when I'm waiting in traffic next to a car with the sound system turned up so high I can hear what they're playing (even when both of us have our windows closed) or when I can hear the drone of music from the headphones of someone next to me on the plane.
Hearing aids are big business, judging from the number of mailings DH and I used to get back when we were in the wealthier ZIP code. The multiple antennas that you could tune to provide less amplification for background sound and more for people facing you and speaking to you seemed like a big improvement but I don't think they improved things much for DH.

My husband was an aircraft mechanic with the Navy. His hearing is shot, too. I used to have what the kids called "bionic" hearing. It's not that good these days, but I can hear a lot that I wish I didn't. I have to make myself remember that the kids don't know I can hear almost every word that is said in my classroom and not react. Otherwise, they would just text more.

Yep, I was in some of those bars too...both as a customer and for a time as a waitress...just an extra job to keep me out of trouble...hahaha! This was one of the bands that played a LOT where I worked, The Seeds... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_SeedsDaryl, the keyboard guy did what they called LSD music....OMG was it ever loud & he would hold one note for over a minute at certain points. If you can find any recordings....take a listen to it. My roommate dated Sky for awhile, he got her started on heroin & I moved out...I wasn't going to be around that stuff! Oh golly, the memories!
