Help! I could use your collective brain power and suggestions. Its holiday buying season which also translates to wicked grocery specials if you buy multiples of whatever it is. I got sucked in and bought 4 Breyer's ice creams because they were $1.99 each AND I hadn't unstuck my sinus infection. Today, I really wish I had bought at least 2 of them different, and I'm not sure what I should do return or exchangewise.
I will feel guilty because they will likely toss throw them out. I cracked open the cinnamon Breyer's one last night even though I had a feeling this was a bad idea. What I really should have bought was the rare Breyer's Natural Vanilla and Natural Cocoa or whatever it is instead of what I have.
I have two left, one totally unopened. I could try exchanging them for the Breyer's Non Dairy which for me would be the Cookies & Cream one. I don't know what corporate idiot thought the second Non dairy flavor should contain peanut butter. One of the top allergens.
This is not the Breyer's I remember.

I also have OTC things I bought because it was the best I could find at the time. Some unused, others not. How do you keep track of your receipts and spending when you are sick or in times of low brain?
Its time to return some of them in part because I need cash. Not sure how/when my disability/FMLA or whatever it is will be approved and when.

I would say you are stuck with them. And if you do return them, the store will simply discard them. They cannot take the chance you did something nefarious to the ice cream.

I would not bother returning ice cream. Chalk it up to a brain fart and move on.
I realize money is tight, but IMO you'd do better to focus more of your efforts on your job search (or retraining) than to try to save $5 on ice cream. That's if the store will even accept a frozen return.

Call the store and ask? Jot down the name of the associate you speak to if they do give you the go ahead to return whatever items. Since they are perishable/opened/not defective someone else might not accept them.

This is wrong. Bring the ice cream to work or to friends/family.

Can you return ice cream? I wouldn't think a grocery store would accept that? Or do they? I don't think they would be able to put that back on the shelf. They haven't had any control over the product or temp, etc. It's not gonna spoil so just leave it in the freezer. It's not gonna go bad.

She can "return" it. I accidentally bought hot salsa so I took it back to Walmart to return. I did have a receipt. They opened it, tossed it in the trash, and gave me my money back. What a waste! But as others have said, they can't resell it. I wouldn't do it, and I always return stuff that doesn't live up to my expectations. But since the episode above, I don't return stuff just because I don't like it. I usually feed anything unopened to my students. High school boys are human garbage disposals.

I know you have been sick and missed a lot of work. But I thought it was basically just a severe cold and/or flu. I didn't know you were sick enough to qualify for short-term disability or whatever you are applying for. I hope you get better soon.

This is wrong. Bring the ice cream to work or to friends/family. I am not the returning type. Too much effort for a couple bucks, but others are different. But, if you decide you can not return them, you can find someone who would love free ice cream. Throwing it out is just a sin.

If you are at the point of needing to return medication that you bought because you are short on cash, have you applied with the state or city for any short term assistance that they have available? Have you looked for local churches that have programs to help people with rent or utilities for a month when they suffer an illness or other hardship? The people at the food stamp office may have some kind of resource list that they can give you with contact numbers for places that can help until your disability pay kicks in.

I can't return it so its a non issue. Since I was sick I bought some of the wrong kinds and my friend wouldn't take what I had. (Prior to this thread.) Not returning to this thread. Just found out I have high blood pressure and the clinic doc says it is unlikely to be due to the stress of waiting to see what ends up in my paycheck this Friday. I have some vacation time they can pull from, but have no idea how quickly FMLA or short term disability would be approved.

This is not my first rodeo, I've been downscale since 7/2003 and using what few programs exist for single folks since 2005 or so. I only have the strength to get well, actually not even that, but basically most of the programs you mention are not quick nor necessarily available. By the time they might even try to help me, it will be January and my immediate cash flow situation will be fixed.
I don't know when I will return to work. Maybe 12/15 or 12/16. Or perhaps a week later. This has been worse than expected.

Sorry you have been sick. I hope you recover soon. You are correct in that there is little out there to assist people who need immediate short term assistance due to illness and missing work short of what a food shelf may provide. My brother is now on disability but until that was approved was living on the good will of friends and family.

Right now its low priority, but I may just it for freezer space if I don't get the energy to give it to someone who would like it. Took my third blood pressure pill (one a day) so I have no idea when I'll be better. Still not getting the sinus drainage I need and I'm off antibiotics. Very tired. Low energy.

I realize this thread is a couple weeks old, but I have to chime in about the non-dairy Breyer's. I seriously doubt the store would do an exchange of the regular ice cream for the non-dairy. The non-dairy is more expensive than the regular, as is the Ben & Jerry's non-dairy over their regular flavors, and they never go on sale at the same time. My daughter is a vegan, so we have experience with all the non-dairy brands!

In any event, I was able to give one of them away to a coworker a few days after I started the thread.
