Who has cut or modified their cable, internet, landline, etc? I really do not need my landline anymore. We don't use it. We need good internet. I use the computer more than anything else. Don't care if we that much TV but DH likes his sports. What is the best approach to being able to access games without paying for a lot of what you don't use? I wish there were more ala carte options. I called about cutting the landline but the cable company claims that won't save me any money.

We got rid of our cable package in January 2014 (I only remember because DD was a baby and I was still on maternity leave). We still have internet through Comcast but dropping the TV portion took our bill from $170 a month to around $65. Add in Hulu and Netflix and it's still less than $100 a month. We occasionally buy a series or an extra subscription; we had HBO Go while Game of Thrones was on and then canceled it, so that was another $15.
We don't watch sports, which I think made it easier to quit cable, but I've never regretted it for a minute. There was just no sense in paying an extra $100 a month to watch the maybe 1-2 shows that weren't on any of our streaming services (and that we could buy separately for less anyway)...
ETA: I've heard Sling TV is good for sports watchers.

Just looked at Sling and we wouldn't get the Steelers game tonight if we had that. Bummer or I would so do that!

When I signed up for my current pkg, I got a better deal signing up for everything (tv, phone, internet and home security), than I was paying for 3 services. I added channels (get them all now), home security, and increased my internet speed and the monthly cost is about $50 a month less. Go figure.
I don't use it all. But if it's going to save me $50 every month, I'll take it!
ETA: Comcast
I hope you find what you are looking for!

We are in a rural area so our choices are Xfinity, Dish or Direct TV. I just had a new roof put on our home so not thrilled to mount a dish up there. Right now we have xfinity. Our 2 year contract is up and you cannot then get the new subscriber rate of course so the price has jumped. i could disconnect it for awhile then reconnect but then i would have to find some way to get internet service.

I hear ya. I've been with them for probably 26 years, so I've been through the same thing you are many times. In my area, Google had just come to town (although not available in all areas- wasn't available in mine). From what I heard, this had Xfinity scrambling. So they offered the new plan, that I signed up for. I'd rather just get the services I use, for a cheaper price. But since that isn't going to happen, I took the next best thing. Not the best solution, but the best solution I could come up with at the time.

I dropped it when I moved. Though I use my parents cable log in so I don't have any of the streaming tv channels thing. There's also directv and spectrum just came out. I know the nhl has their own streaming thing but I think they block local teams based on your location.

We are avid sports-watchers, so we won't turn off the cable package until there's a viable option to replace the cable's live-sports channels. EPL, MLB, NFL, NBA, MLS, college football and basketball, and the occasional cornhole match are all parts of our lives.

Those are our three choices as well. The house is surrounded by trees so that we can barely get an antenna to work, so neither of the dishes is really an option unless we put it in our yard. There's a sign on a telephone pole down the road that says "CHEAP HI-SPEED RURAL INTERNET" but I went to the website and their "cheap" is $150 a month for what I'm getting now. So I have made my peace with Comcast and pray that they don't jack up the internet rate... LOL. I did learn that you have to be a non-subscriber for at least 6 months before you qualify for promo rates again.

I haven't had a land line in 20 years and never had cable (it's not even available out in the country where I am). I did have DirecTV for a number of years, but cut that maybe 10 years ago. I get about 15 local channels with a digital antenna and have a Tivo so I can DVR them all. I also pay for Netflix and Amazon Prime (although I rarely watch Amazon Prime, it's mostly for the other perks that I pay that fee). We don't watch sports except for Vikings games which are on local networks, so I don't feel like we're missing anything, and we watch a lot of TV...too much.

I ditched the landline about 6 years ago along with downgrading the cable. We don't watch much TV mostly Neflex I've tried to cut the cable altogether, but need the internet and costs is almost double for just internet.

The only thing we actually dumped was the landline through Comcast, and have Ooma. I think that we have the enhanced package, which allows us to call worldwide free for minimal cost. This has been a lifesaver, as my sister has burned up a lot of minutes on Ting.
Our choices for Internet are few. And we are surrounded by such large trees that signals are squat.

How does Ooma work as far as 911 goes? I have been thinking about switching but can't find anything that tells me whether or not Ooma can still dial 911 even if your wireless is out.

Two of the three biggest consumers of televised sports in my household are now away at college. I'd love to cut the cord but need to find a way for DH to still watch football. I mostly watch the big 3 networks and PBS and some on Discovery, Smithsonian, and Nat Geo, but I am willing to give up our pricey cable package even if it means I lose the Nat Geo. We'll keep our landline, however, given the likelihood that we would need to make a 911 call at any given moment.

I got rid of cable and had a small antenna installed on my roof. Even though my house is low, and surrounded by trees, I get about 17 channels. It's plenty.

I'm not buying a generator to be able to run my phone. Right now our landline works regardless of power, we'll stick with that until the girls are old enough to have their own phones.

We lose power regularly enough that a generator is worth it to us. In fact, last Sunday we came home from Seattle and were in the middle of a small windstorm. Power was out when we got home, and for about 4 hours afterwards. I think most winters we are without power for at least a day.

I am 60 miles as the crow flies from both Boston and Providence. I bought an 85 mile antenna, which I had an electrician mount at the highest point of my house, but on the wall not the roof. it is grounded. I also have the Sling subscription that allows for multiple streams across different devices ($25/month vs $20) and I added a sports package to it. I dropped off all of my Comcrap hardware a week ago Friday, so last Sunday was the first day of NFL football without the cable service. I somehow missed that CBS and FOX were not part of the Sling coverage, so we were limited to the RedZone channel during the day games, that's part of the sports package. my electrician came out on Tuesday, and I'm currently watching the end of the Pats/Chargers game over the air on CBS. it can be done, you just need to be creative. have you looked online at the FCC website to see where your broadcast stations are in relation to your house? I would be happy to pull up the Amazon link for my antenna if it would make sense for you.

I went from an almost $200/month bill from Comcrap, down to $75 to them for internet only, plus $35/month for Sling. one time purchases of hardware, plus paying an electrician to wire up an antenna. that all will have paid itself off in no time.

I have a digital antenna for TV. I am getting ready to cut my landline, and internet. I am changing my cell plan. When I have time, I'll get cable internet. It will cost me less than land line or dsl. My phone can be hooked up to my emergency radio. You can crank it to charge your cell phone. It should save me at least $100 a month. I am planning on retiring within the next 6 months. I need to cut back now so I won't have that giant shock from reducing expenses.

Well, I tied the cord tighter two years ago. But having said that I have had bare bones tv, phone for years and years. I did jump on broadband like a cat on a mouse's back around 1999 or 2000 when Comcast came to our street and never looked back.
Two years ago I decided to heck with it and have Xfinity TV with all the bells and whistles (but not the package with Hbo, etc but just about everything else), phone with all the bells and whistles and of course internet. Sitting in sports bars to watch sports was getting more expensive than paying Comcast and I don't get up off the floor as easily when I slide off the bar stool
Son takes care of cell just to make sure I will have one on me for emergencies.
I figure I've earned all the bells and whistles since I did without for so long.

Before older son had his own phone, but was staying home alone, I just got a cheap Tracfone with prepaid minutes and kept it plugged in in the kitchen as our "landline".
