I hope someone has some knowledge about this. I've done our taxes in both Turbo Tax and H&R Block online and with TT we should get a refund of $27, but entering the exact same information into H&R Block gives us a refund of $190. I'm so confused about this now. It looks like H&R is figuing a greater amount on the state/local taxes, but why would it do that. I looked at the IRS tables and TT is more accurate on it. I would sure like the extra $170 but not at the risk of screwing up my taxes.
Any advice on why H&R would give a bigger amount?

The only time I tried to use the Block software, I did not get the answer I knew was correct.
I don't know why Block is giving you a higher refund that TT, but I ended up buying TT that year so I knew I had a correct return.

Most DIY tax software programs include all kinds of worksheets showing computations of various items. I would recommend that you look at those worksheets (if these programs have them).

Since the OP does't understand why the difference occurred or which software package is correct, I suggest she have a licensed professional (CPA or EA) prepare her tax return.

Here in WA state, we have a flat state sales tax rate, and various local rates depending on where you live. Since the deduction difference is with the sales/local taxes, perhaps the programs are using different rates for your locality. As taxref recommended, look at the worksheet for the sales/local tax deduction and see which has the proper tax rates.

Thanks for the replies. Took out the trusty pen and paper and figured it out myself. Turbo Tax was correct based on the IRS calculators, have no clue where H&R got there numbers. Though it was such a small amount it may not have mattered, but I'm glad I did some double-checking before just going with the higher amount.
