If I buy an island I want the water to be warm. It's interesting that Hayes mansion is struggling when there is a shortage of hotel rooms in Silicon Valley. It's far away though. I imagine it would be an entire gut job for a Silicon Valley type. Too old world style for their tastes. Who wants to remodel 200 rooms? Surprisingly, I wonder why Google or another internet company does not buy it and house people there that cannot afford to rent let alone purchase a residence in town. Would be a good public relations move for them.

If they wanted to do something like that, there are better located options. As for property taxes, they're around 1% plus extras (bond measures, sewer etc), it usually comes out to 1.25% on residences, I'm not sure if it's any different for commercial properties, so if it sells for 30M, then 300k per year.
