Not sure how many homes have a root cellar these days. I leave potatoes and onions out if I will be consuming them in the next few days. Otherwise, they go into the crisper drawer at the bottom of the fridge and use within the next week or two..

I never refrigerate any of the items shown. But will put onion in fridge after cutting if don't use the whole onion. I vacuum seal it. Being single I don't buy a bunch of stuff to go bad. Have put garlic cloves in olive oil on ocassion and stuck in fridge. I did did vaccum half an avocado for a few days and put in fridge. Not much help here. The Gulf Coast doesn't lend itself to cool dry areas

I stick mine in a lower cabinet. Never store potatoes and onions together. I toss the potatoes if they sprout too much (a small sprout or two is ok but tells me to use it up NOW). I try to buy what I can eat. If I cut up an onion and can't use it, I often freeze it. I have a vacuum sealer. countrygirl2 can probably give you definitive directions.

We have a basement that is air conditioned, yet potatoes and onions will not keep, not cool enough.
Same in winter, too warm.
I try to use them up. DH has talked about disconnectin the furnace ducts to a small section of the basement so we have a place to store such items.

I grew up without the commodities of the modern world, not even a refrigerator. We barely had electricity. Root cellars were used just for winter storage but during the sumer time we simply kept our potatoes or onions in a dry, dark and if possible more constant temps. That was typically a box under a day bed in the kitchen/big room/whatever use room. Mind you, all buildings were made of adobe and by that I mean the walls were built using minimal wood pieces enveloped in a mix of mud and straw. Miraculously they were cooler in the summer.

I toss potatoes in a bottom mostly unused cupboard until I walk into the kitchen wondering what died and realize it's the potatoes I've forgotten about...I don't recommend this path.

I did a crock pot if carmalized onions yesterday and froze. Think I'll do one more, but the smell pretty much takes over everything, so next week. I'm going to pickle and dehydrate some purple onions. I also might freeze some peppers and onions.

They last a long time that way. And onions don't make me cry when I cut them when I store them in the frig. first.

I keep tomatoes on the counter. Onions it a wire 'bowl' on an open shelf under the counter - I use a couple a week. Potatoes get stored in the basement year round (I don't buy them often and tend to use them up when I do have them so they aren't around too long). I keep bread, basil in a cup of water, in the fridge. I keep garlic in the freezer prepared in a variety of ways: whole peeled cloves, roasted (a paste), and 'minced' with a bit of olive oil in the food processer. I've got a handful of varieties of garlic in the freezer all labeled. the roasted and 'minced' tends to be the Italian garlic. The individual cloves are usually the other varieties (I especially like the "Russian red" and "Duganski" and "music" varieties).

It wasn't the stuttering so much as the vacuuming of your avocado that cracked me up! I could totally see you doing that grumbling how you hate vacuuming!

I could totally see you doing that grumbling how you hate vacuuming! I honed in on the double did! Two dids and no "seal"! Apparently a coherent thought is another one of my shortcomings, Eta I do hate to vaccum!

I refrigerate everything. Not potatoes, I hope, unless you've cooked them. Refrigerating them turns the starch to sugar. You aren't even supposed to refrigerate tomatoes, but I do. I like them cold.

Things left out don't last long in Houston, even with air conditioning. I can keep potatoes for a few days in the pantry but I buy frozen garlic cubes and refrigerate onions after they're cut.
