Target is currently running a number of promotions where you earn a $5 gift card for future use, on bulk purchases that are already sale priced pretty nicely. if you have the storage space, definitely check it out.
I just came back with two packages of 8 huge (or mega?) rolls, whatever equals 20 regular rolls, of select-a-size Bounty paper towels, for $17.99 apiece. I had wandered over after making a return, to pick up a couple rolls to tide me over until I can place and receive an order from Jet.com. thanks, Target, for saving me from myself in making a Jet.com order lol...

I bought a non-perishable item, that I will use eventually, in bulk to both get a better price on it now AND get a gift card for a future purchase. I do a fair amount of shopping at Target, so this is a good deal for me.
do you coupon or buy in bulk?

I thought you'd purchased 2 packages of 8 mega rolls, each roll being the equivalent of 20 normal rolls, meaning you'd have effectively bought 320 rolls in one go. Mrs. Virgil and I maybe go through about 10 rolls a year, so 32 years' supply for a $5 gift card struck me as odd.

ah, all good. that is exactly what I purchased, but we go through an incredible amount of paper towels in my house. between the myriad reasons to use something disposable regarding cleaning up after two large dogs and all of the ways to use them while cooking (draining bacon fat, straining the water out of thawed frozen veggies, for instance), we use a lot. we do need to cut back some, though.

My generation was taught that using paper products destroys the world's rainforests, hence we feel pathologically guilty whenever we buy them.

I think I'm a handful of years older than you. a single handful.

Yeah. I'm not cleaning up cat puke and then rinsing and reusing. I flunked out of a forestry program in college and I still feel that guilt but I'm still using paper towels.

I've done this type of deal before. I did it most recently a couple of months ago in conjunction with an AARP $15/$50 rebate on Proctor & Gamble products. I used a lot of $2 coupons, but the catch was that it had to be $50 after coupons. That didn't stop me from using coupons because I would rather get more product. Fortunately, they didn't penalize me for the $10 gift card Target also gave me. I have probably 6 months or more of Tide pods plus the $10 gift card. I used the $15 on Amazon. This type of thing is awesome if you know how to combine stuff.

You two need more fiber in your diet. Paper towel, Archie, not toilet paper. I stand by my comment. Everyone can use more fiber. (If I have learned nothing from recent politics, it is double down when proven wrong).

I'm way older than you and a tree hugger of the highest order. I keep one roll of paper towels for son when he comes by. Drives him bonkers that I don't use them. Funny thing is he should remember growing up without paper towels and no paper napkins. How soon they forget!
Oh, and I actually wrote American Express a nice tree hugger letter about sending me solicitations for a Business CC. I politely pointed out how many trees they were killing to offer a business CC to someone who doesn't have a business. They stopped sending the notices. Probably since I told them I had no need for another cc but I like to think they heeded my one woman protest.
