My friend was describing a story about her childhood in Iowa.  When she got to the part about how her sister had a King size waterbed that she won as the high school Homecoming Queen, we all started laughing hysterically.  

Us:  Wait, wait, wait.  What do you mean she "won" a waterbed?
Friend:  When she was crowned Homecoming Queen, her prize was a waterbed.
Us:  And nobody found that a little, um, inappropriate?
Friend:  Well, yeah, but I guess they just gave out whatever was donated and my parents didn't know what to say when the truck pulled up to the house...  





I really didn't have any room to talk.  Last year, when I returned home after being gone for a week at a regatta, my youngest son (10 years old then) came running out of the house to greet me.  He jumps joyfully into my arms, happily screeching, "Mom!  I'm so glad you're home!  I love you so much and I won a shotgun!!!"  Guess the backstory was that DH took our son to an Action Pistol event where DH was serving as the officiating Range Safety Officer.  As a thank you for my husband's work, they gave him one of the $100 raffle tickets to some big deal charity raffle.  DH gives the ticket to son... who wins.  The grand prize is a whole pile of stuff that you really don't generally give to a 10 year old - leatherman knife and belt holster, Maglite flashlight, multiple ammunition clips, etc along the with grand prize - a crazy weird shotgun that just looks nasty, like something the Terminator would carry.  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kel-Tec_KSG

Apparently, DH didn't want to be "rude" by politely donating the gun back to the charity cause, plus he didn't want to disappoint our son who was so excited and what harm could it be since it will be locked up with all the other guns in the safe?   My response:   but it was really too late at that point to do much about it.

My stepson got a music CD with a parental advisory sticker from the other side of the family when he was too young to have it at our house. He knew he couldn't keep it so he traded it on the school bus for this "really cool looking thing" i.e. a unused pot pipe. The bus driver saw it which got him a three day suspension. But at least he didn't listen to that inappropriate music.

When I was in middle school, we were all into water skiing. My brother got a new high end slalom ski for a Christmas gift. It came with a free t-shirt. It said " <brand name> water skiers stay up longer." I was in middle school and didn't get the double entendre. I remember my parents chuckling about it. I don't know if I ever wore it to school.

Now that was inappropriate.

When DS2was about 7yo he and I went to a Danish embassy Xmas brunch with activities and a raffle afterwards. DS2won a very good bottle of Scottisch Whiskey. He wouldn't exchange it for anything else.  He had his Xmas present for his dad. I was sworn to secrecy only to have him run into the house shouting "look what I won". After that bottle went into his room, he wrapped it and A few weeks later it was under the tree with him very excitedly looking whether dad was properly surprised and impressed  xH was a good dad so he played his part and played it well.

When my daughter was 16, I found a paper where she had written out the words to the song "Promiscuous". I wasn't too worried, but I did listen to the song on the internet so I could recognize it. A couple weeks later the song came on the radio in the car and she changed the station. I told her "I thought you liked that song." She said "mom do you know what that means! That's gross".
