I'm from the south so I tend to refer to a lot of people by random terms of endearment, LOL. Honey, sweetie, that sort of thing. Or baked goods....like muffin or snickerdoodle. What can I say? I come by it naturally. Generally after running through a couple of female family member names that were not me, my grandfather would land on something like "doohickey" or "thingamajig"to call me.
My name does not lend itself toward nicknames. It lends itself toward people just getting it slightly wrong all the time, but that's a different issue.
I have a friend who often calls me Penelope. That is not remotely close to my actual name, he just insists I look like a Penelope. I have no idea if that's good, bad or in between. Aunt M would occasionally land on Rutabaga at the end of that list of names that weren't mine. Of course, I've got a relative that likes to call me either watermelon or onion. We use one nickname for DS5, but he chose to use the other end of his name in school. It's always confusing. Of course, now that his classmates are getting to be tweens, some of his buddies have just started using his last name instead. It's an improvement over "curlyfries" that a few older kids were testing out last year. I don't think they actually knew his name, they just knew him by his hair.

As is Rutabaga.

You're from the south? Tell me, is Bubba a real name? That's what's on peoples' birth certificates? If not, what is it short for? Meh. It's a "real name" like millions of other stupid nicknames I suppose. As CL said, it can baby version of brother, for kids that don't pronounce correctly yet. That said, I've never in my life met anyone who goes by (or ever went by) Bubba. The south is perhaps not what TV would have people believe.

If that is the criteria I best prepare for soon being nicknamed Bubba. ugh.

I have family in the south and cousins that will forever be called Bubba and Sissy. It would drive me nuts, but they don't seem to mind.

I was called Weasel as a child, I assumed it was because I was cute and soft like the little animal in "pop goes the weasel". I hated being called Little Alice when I was larger than Big Alice and asked not to be called Auntie Alice. My brother and I are going to visit our Aunt Alice Tuesday she is 89 and tiny and frail, I am 69 and not tiny, still don't like being called Little Alice. We didn't like her when we were kids, she drank, smoked and swore at us. She quit drinking and smoking and doesn't swear at us now and likes us to come visit her. I have been called Allison by a coworker even when I asked him not to several times, he wanted to know why not and I told him it wasn't my name. He thought it was but Alice was a nic name. I was also called Big Al by other coworkers. My niece Allison and I were talking about nic names and she said if she had one it would be Alice.

My grandfather always called me Annie-Petunia. Some people try to call me Annie, but I don't like that and quickly tell them it's Anne. DH is Steve and is sometimes called Steve-O. His other nicknames can't be put here as they are too close to revealing his last name.

That one made me laugh. I have a cat named The Floof. When I took her to the vet one of the doctors came in and said she just had to come see her because of the name - and she has a horse named The Smoosh. I have a pic of her from a few days old where's she's laying on DH's shoulder and her face is all smooshed up. WHAT ELSE WAS I SUPPOSED TO CALL HER. Love to see that picture!

BIL used to call one niece Fester because she had practically no hair at all until she was about 4. It wasn't even that it was blonde fuzz or anything, she was just hairless. She has more than made up for it now. And she is definitely a blonde.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Nicknames are a rite of passage in the oilfield. I go by Country on the rig. I have worked with: Frodo, Cupcake, Rip, Lumpy, Blue, Tugboat, Coon, Tee, Coupe, Poptart, Squirrel, Dice, Catfish, Bump, X, Gunz, Gunner, Mutha, and Mountain Goat.

Howard and how he became known as "Fruit Loops" on BBT came to my mind immediately. Space is a whole different frontier than an oilfield but apparently the nicknames can be just as weird/amusing.

My given name is Elizabeth due to Catholic Church naming laws back in 1965, called Beth all my life but always wanted to be Liz cause Liz just sounds cool to me. Sigh. I have been told that I don't look like a Liz at all. My girls gave themselves the nicknames Bob and Fred many years ago and now that they are grown up, they would prefer we all stop calling them that...too bad, the nicknames have stuck! It's funny how sometimes names really do suit the person, and other times, you just think, HUH?

How do is one supposed to look like a Liz? Liz Taylor? Believe me, she in NO WAY WHATSOEVER resembles her. My favorite was when my friend called her Elisabitch by accident once. I've been using that privately. It fits.

We called DD pootail after Winnie the pooh when little, thinking back that was not very nice.
Her brother used to call her piggy because it infuriated her so he would do it more, sigh.
I was called Susie when little as my middle name was Sue, husband is Robert Tommy and called Tom or T Tom.
They had all kinds of names for guys in construction I remember dad calling one Sneaky Snake, something about stealing your beer, I doubt he did to his face. I can remember dad being called Gimmick, have no idea why. Don't know what hubby was called, but they do have a lot of silly names for guys.

My mom's nickname was Lolly and her given name was Leah although she went by her middle name of Lynette. Don't think I ever heard where Lolly came from though.

My DH was called Ernie by some of his friends, as in Bert and Ernie. Its kinda funny 'cause at the time I met him, I kept thinking about boyfriends and the phrase, "the importance of being earnest". I've never seen the play, but that became an important quality to me in dating.

I've heard Lolly for Lorraine - my dad and his sibs used it for their sister years ago. Other funny family names - My DH'S grandma was called Mid, for Mildred. One aunt's given name is Bridget, but she goes by Agnes - she thinks it sounds prettier. And then there's my mom's sister Patricia, that everyone calls Pat. Everyone except for her husband who always called her Trish. It was so cute - somehow it reminded me of the Addams family. Didn't Gomez call his wife Tish or something similar? Fred was nothing like Gomez, very uptight and proper, but whenever he said "Trish" I pictured Gomez kissing his wife's arm...

My Russian name doesn't lend itself to nicknames, although I really, really wanted one as a teen.

I work hard to use the name that people tell me when they introduce themselves. I was informed once of one major exception. My new wife told me that she had a discussion with my older sister. Apparently I am the only person in the world allowed to refer to her as "Nan" instead of "Nancy". Little brothers Ha! My parents and I are the only one to call my bro by his shortened name. He switched it sometime in middle school, it was too late for me to change. My friends refer to him that way since they hear me say it, but they don't really interact with him so it hasn't come up. But his first wife tried to use it after she heard us use it. He refused to respond to it when she said it 😂😂 The evil part of me wants to have kids just to see what he does when they call him uncle nickname. Eta I'm not a total bitch...he's honestly never asked me to change his name and sometimes I'll remember the longer name. I might have been as a ~9 year old when I asked my parents why he changed it and they said cuz he was getting made fun of for words than rhyme with it and my response was "but x y z all rhyme with the long version, aren't those worse?" 😂
