I have a friend Deborah, she's either Deb or Deborah never Debbie. She doesn't even look like a Debbie (for whatever that means ) My brother is Joseph, I don't think I ever heard Joseph, just Jo-jo or Joe. Just my silly thoughts this evening.

I work hard to use the name that people tell me when they introduce themselves. I was informed once of one major exception. My new wife told me that she had a discussion with my older sister. Apparently I am the only person in the world allowed to refer to her as "Nan" instead of "Nancy". Little brothers

I call my sister Lizard or Lizzie. I think if anyone else ever did that, they would have no teeth left. I had no idea that a BIL's actual first name was John and not Jack. I have no idea why Jack is a nickname for John when it has the same # of letters. Of course, in my loving way I call him Jackass, because he is one, but only to DH. My name has no nickname, thankfully except for the 2 people who ever called me Care Bear. 1 is my mother.

I honestly think one of the reasons that I divorced my ex was because he insisted on calling me "Sue" instead of Susan. It took me almost 25 years so that wasn't entirely it. My point is that no one should disrespect someone by calling them by a name they dislike. I hated "Sue." It doesn't matter why. It should be enough that it wasn't my "name" and I didn't like it. I still remember the discomfort of being introduced to his employees and them greeting me with "Sue." I would have to say, "Please call me Susan. That is my name." You should call people what they preferred to be called. The end. Anything else is simply disrespectful. The end.

Damien isn't one I'd name anyone. Probably because of teaching but we had a student with that name and he lived up to it. My dept head ended up with him one year and kept referring to him as "demon" to us. Then he slipped and called him that in front of him. Yikes. I had a student who said his name was Jesus. With the J being pronounced. So when I went back into our office after class was over I announced that I had Jesus in my class!!

Always told DH if we had kids, a boy was going to be named Damien. Maybe that's why we didn't have them. I named my first hamster that and little bastard lived up to the name.

HAHAAH, me ex wanted to name our son Damien, I said no but the compromise was Damon, which coincidentally gets mispronounced Damien frequently.

My sister's name is Melissa. When Thing 1 was learning how to talk, she pronounce it as Melicken. So we call her Melick. Although my uncle calls her sis.

Everyone calls me Andrea. I only have one uncle that has called me Andi as long as I can remember.

We hear that a lot, a name that just reminds us of an animal or something, though it's a cute name for a cow.

One of the higher ups at work has a son named Jackson. I always think about my dog when I hear him talk about his kid.

Most people call me Meghan or Megh, doesn't really matter. Yes, I keep the h when I shorten my name. My name is Meghan, not Megan, so I am Megh, not Meg. I started that in high school for whatever reason and it stuck. My brother calls me Meg-huh. Some close friends call me Meggie, usually when we're being cute or drunk. My mom calls me Meggie-Eggie. Hubs' name is Jared, so he gets J-rad a lot.

I agree with @bamafan1954 that it is respectful to always use the preferred name. At the same time I do find it amusing when people get all tied up in knots when their name is misheard or mispronounced. My name is Gaelic and the pronunciation does not correspond to English. I'm friendly with a woman named Stacey who once indignantly complained on Facebook that two people had called her Tracey. I replied with the eyeroll emoji and said "oh pleeeeaaasse" .

A short list of the nicknames for my children which do not give away their actual names: Bizzy, Blizzard, Bizness, Boo, Bizzy-boo, Brindle, Kindle, Kinz, Vanderbibbles and Smoosh.
The other one is:
Care-bear, Kricket, Kage, Jo-Jo, Caribou, Bear-bear, and Squishy.
As well as many more that relate too closely to their actual names to share on the interwebs.

I love nicknames 😀. I reserve the right to call my kids by their special nicknames which may embarrass them. Nicknames are better when they just happen, not when you put thought in it.
My youngest given name is Jeremy. T home we called him Jer. When the Star Wars movie with Jar Jar Binks came out, he became Jer Jer. Then because of his personality he became Jer Bear, or just Bear. In high school he played football (offensive line) and then the cheerleaders heard us call him that, so they started calling him that. I thought he would be mad, but he liked when the cheerleaders called him that.

I'm from the south so I tend to refer to a lot of people by random terms of endearment, LOL. Honey, sweetie, that sort of thing. Or baked goods....like muffin or snickerdoodle. What can I say? I come by it naturally. Generally after running through a couple of female family member names that were not me, my grandfather would land on something like "doohickey" or "thingamajig"to call me.
My name does not lend itself toward nicknames. It lends itself toward people just getting it slightly wrong all the time, but that's a different issue.
I have a friend who often calls me Penelope. That is not remotely close to my actual name, he just insists I look like a Penelope. I have no idea if that's good, bad or in between.

A few years ago, step-MIL asked us when we were going to stop calling our son "Mikey". He was probably 4 at the time, maybe only 3 even. Actually, more likely 3, now that I think about it. Apparently, that's too old for that kind of nickname. Never mind her grandson, "Tommy", was around 11, and his name wasn't a problem. And there were also 13-14 yo granddaughters, going with diminutive forms of their names. Of course, everything that her own kids chose to do was beyond reproach.

I wish my son would use his adult name. With the Y on the end it was cute when he was young. At almost 34, not so cute.

I call myself a geographic southerner because I was born and raised farther south than almost all in the US. Anyway, on the project I am no responsible for at work, I deal with about 10 construction management people daily. There is are Buddy, Butch and Buster, but no Bubba.

My nickname for my sister is Twinkie, cause she is like a Twinkie, she drives me nuts, but she all soft inside like a marshmallow. She is 7 years older than me, and I've always told people I'm her older sister.
My own name does not have a nickname, but my family all shortens my name.
