So what? He wasn't hired to be a construction guy, he was hired to be a football coach of a once proud Texas team.....one that he can bring back to the prominence it once had, and into contention for a national championship. You're a texas fan? This explains so much. As for Herman, this issue is that for someone who is so proud of his Mensa credentials, he's an idiot when it comes to common sense and social media. If texas wins, everyone will forget about this. Every time texas loses or struggles, this gif will make an appearance. Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, and Urban Meyer are arguably the top three coaches in college football today. You don't see any of them pulling cheap stunts like this one. So maybe he's actually a genius. A clip of a coach knocking down a locker with a sledgehammer gets no press. This clip is getting attention for the fail...all publicity is good publicity right?
Maybe he's following the Jim Harbaugh model. Harbaugh turned Michigan around almost immediately, and he has TONS of embarrassing social media clips.

Gee, I can swing a sledgehammer but can't coach football. I guess I'm a moron.

What difference does it make? Because several posters in this thread seem to be focused on the idea that swinging a sledgehammer is the only form of 'honest work' when I'm talking about manual labor in general. It is fairly difficult to go through your whole life without doing some form of manual labor, but I suppose it is possible for some people. As you were the one who described the ability to swing a sledge hammer as a prerequisite for having done a day of honest labor, I'm not sure who 'some people' are, other than you.

Who cares? He is getting $5 million/year. Why should he? Because he embarrassed himself and the program? Do you not understand that this was being livestreamed on different forms of social media, that they actively marketed this to show their 'new beginning', and he embarrassed himself? As for 'why should he', do you not believe in doing things the right way? He didn't embarrass himself or the program. No one cares but you. Why is this so important to you? Why do you seem to care about this so much?

If he made $50k a year would there be this much outrage over him not knowing how to sling a sledghammer?

If he made 50K working in construction, I hope so! I have never done manual labor for pay or volunteering, although I have done home maintenance tasks. All the days I worked were honest. It was NOT difficult to be in a situation where I never did manual labor on anyone else's behalf.

I've mowed foot tall weeds with a push mower, on a slope, but never used a sledge hammer. Guess that wasn't an honest day's work, despite how hard it was.

I should probably clarify "experience"...no head coaching experience in a major program...as compared to other top-paid coaches like Harbaugh and Saban. He's got experience as an assistant.

Great demonstration that the coach doesn't understand much about construction. Got to take out the seat and overhead first. Then knock the vertical dividers into the space vacated by the seat and overhead.
It's not about swinging the sledge. It's about what you swing the sledge against first.

You have never, in your life, done manual labor? Never mowed a lawn? Done yard maintenance? Raked leaves? How do you know he's never done these things? I guess I don't care enough about football because this video doesn't trigger any hostile angry feelings in me whatsoever. You do realize my question was directed at The Walk of the Penguin Mich, right?

Actually you made it that way when you were trying to say that he's never done an honest day's work in his life. You made it appear that when he didn't swing a sledgehammer accurately that it automatically means he's never did any manual labor in his life. Not being able to swing a sledgehammer doesn't = never has done manual labor before. Maybe this is a regional dialect thing here, but I've always understood the phrase "an honest day's work" to mean manual labor. Maybe people don't think the two terms are synonymous where you are?

Harbaugh is the exact opposite of Herman, he is a masterful user of social media. When Harbaugh does things, it is always to give his program a competitive edge, especially in recruiting, e.g. Spring practice at IMG academy, holding satellite camps across the nation, etc. I've noticed Harbaugh also trolls other conferences, especially the SEC, on Twitter. Harbaugh's advantage, though, is that it is already known that he is a terrific coach. He built up Stanford from nothing and made them a powerhouse program, and took the 49ers to 3 NFC championships and a Super Bowl in the NFL. Harbaugh is a winner. Herman has 2 years as a head coach at a G5 program as his whole head coaching resume. Harbaugh has skins on the wall, he can be outlandish and no one will care because he wins. Herman hasn't earned that benefit of the doubt yet.

No. People will forget about this in another week, and it won't be seen again unless he does something else stupid. As I've said before, if he wins, no one will care. This will be brought up as a joke to laugh at, a moment of self-deprecating humor for him. If he loses? It will be a long-running joke brought up every time they lose.

Do we have any other women posters who work in the trades or manual labor?

I think he is slinging the sledgehammer because he found out how underpaid he is compared to a lot of other college coaches Given his lack of experience (only 2 years as a head coach at a G5 program), he is overpaid right now. texas' problem is that they let their ego get in the way of good business. They have to pay their coach well over $5 million a year because their rivals pay $5 million, so they have to pay more, even if it is to a poor coach (Charlie Strong) or one lacking the resume or experience to justify that salary (Tom Herman). Consider that Bob Stoops at Oklahoma makes $5.25 million in base salary, and Stoops has won 10 Big 12 conference championships, and a national championship in 2000. Herman has one conference championship at a G5 program, and no playoff appearances or national championships. When you compare the two, you can see how overpaid Herman really is. Again, ego getting in the way of good business. As a comparison, P.J. Fleck, who has two more years experience as a head coach and completely rebuilt Western Michigan, will be paid $3.5 million this year at Minnesota.

I don't see why he would even care what you think. You are the only one who is concerned and think he should be embarrassed. I don't know why you are so invested in what someone rose thinks about something that is not his paid profession. He does not know how to sling a sledge hammer. BFD, many don't and have managed to go through life perfectly happy. Lemme see if I can explain this to you. A couple weeks, I was coming down some stairs after dinner from the club. There was some sort of ritzy event going on in the atrium, where probably 30 were milling about at the top of the stairs. My hip gave out and I fell down the stairs, landing at the feet of a guy and his wife dressed in a tux and a formal gown. The rest of the party observed my clutziness too, from the top of the stairs. I was embarrassed, but then I realized that they were more concerned as to whether or not I injured myself. I was the only one who was momentarily embarrassed about what they thought, and realized that that is really stupid. This is the same thing.

Do we have any other women posters who work in the trades or manual labor? Nope. You are the only one who defined in the title of this thread as being able to sling a sledge hammer as an honest day's work. I didn't grow up affluent, mostly lower middle class. I never had to do yard work because I had a brother where this was his chore when we moved into a house, and prior to this we lived in apartments. I really don't care to sling a hammer. I was a scientist in my other life, and I have other talents. That doesn't make those abilities not an honest day's labor. For instance, I would not hand you a pipettor and expect you to feed cells without contaminating anything. It requires tremendous eye hand coordination, especially doing it in protective gear with several layers of visual impairment. What you are laughing at is me sitting you at the hood, asking you to do this incredibly basic, simple chore, filming it and laughing at you (and expecting you to be embarrassed) when you inevitably screw things up. It isn't a difficult chore, but you've never been taught. Personally, I think that is pretty petty and I wouldn't do it. But you seem to get a big thrill out of it.

I have, however used a hammer to rebuilt/repaired some decks.
I swung a sledge most often with my "white collar" real estate agent job (1981-1985). Pounding in Open House signs in San Diego clay soils is tough!
Hey, it's good to have these fallible moments to keep your head from swelling too big with your successes.

I've had moments when I was tempted to use a sledgehammer but I reminded myself I would wind up on a chain gang picking up trash on the side of the road. And I totally look like crap in orange?

I am sorry to say but we don't give a shit if you can swing a sledgehammer. When you fail to successfully extract the brain, isolate a very specific set of cells and can't figure out what antibodies to use we'll mock you for not knowing basic science. After all if it's such a mamby pamby job that only people who can't or won't do physical labor pick you should be able to do it easy.

Again, I think you all need to refer back to #49. This is nothing more than a Texas-Texas A&M rivalry thing. From Wikipedia: It is also (according to the same article) the only rivalry ever honored with a special Wheaties box. You can bet that if it was the A&M coach who did not know how to swing a sledgehammer you would not be having this conversation.

He didn't embarrass himself or the program. No one cares but you. Why is this so important to you? Why do you seem to care about this so much? Do you have a different definition of 'embarrassed' than everyone else? When your screw-up goes viral on the Internet and instantly become a failure meme, you've embarrassed yourself and the program. Is it permanent? No. People will forget about this in another week, and it won't be seen again unless he does something else stupid. As I've said before, if he wins, no one will care. This will be brought up as a joke to laugh at, a moment of self-deprecating humor for him. If he loses? It will be a long-running joke brought up every time they lose. So basically, if he wins, everything will be ok. If he loses, it won't. That's true with or without a video though.
Embarrassing yourself and the program only happens if people think differently of you or your program based on the action...there's probably literally not one person on the planet who has a different viewpoint of Texas football based on that video. At least not anyone who counts, maybe some random kids who don't follow sports and think the video is dumb. Herman may have embarrassed himself because now maybe some people think his demolition skills are poor...nobody in their right mind has changed any views on Texas football from this video though.
Does that mean Harbaugh constantly embarrasses himself and his program then though? Because he is mocked more than any college football coach in the country for his embarrassing online antics like appearing in some low-budget "rap video". There are far more people who were neutral about Michigan who now dislike them due to Harbaugh and his online antics than anyone who thinks negatively about Texas football because a coach failed at demolishing some lockers.
Both coaches have simply given cannon fodder for haters if things go poorly...not that either should care, because if things go poorly they have much larger problems.

So, I'm wondering. Does the locker room at Texas A&M have nice nameplates for the players? Or is it like the new ones at Texas? Texas ups facilities arms race

So, I'm wondering. Does the locker room at Texas A&M have nice nameplates for the players? Or is it like the new ones at Texas? Texas ups facilities arms race These new lockers are a "Welcome to 2014" moment for texas. The above pic is from A&M's locker room....in 2014, when we just finished our latest renovation. To show you how far behind texas is with its facilities, look at this instagram video clip. That is current head coach Tom Herman as a GA on the right. He was a GA at texas from 1999-2000. Their weight room hasn't changed in that time period, and that was taken 17 years ago. As a comparison, here is Kansas State's weight room and locker room. Kansas State's athletic budget is over $100 million less than texas' athletic budget. That is nothing. There are schools that spent $40k per locker in their locker room, outfitting them with DVD players, HD television screens, individual climate control systems, PS3 gaming systems, and every other bell and whistle you can think of. It is all part of creating the 'wow' factor for recruiting. Bryan Fischer is also about three years behind, because texas hasn't been "the richest athletic department in the country" since then. For another comparison, here is Kansas' locker room. Now keep in mind that Kansas is a basketball school, and yet their football facilities are better than what texas has; that should give you an idea of how far behind texas is when it comes to facilities. The facilities texas currently has were state-of-the-art in 1998. I actually think the metallic metal look is a poor choice for the lockers, and think they should have used some type of dark would for a classic look. I agree with the Ohio State writer who said they look "like a vending machine where you can buy players who will go 5-7 every year". I think the choice of using metal is going to backfire because light will reflect off of that in the locker room, making for some garish images when they try to take pictures to publicize the new look.
