We had some wicked winds on Wednesday - more than 80 mph.  A train was blown off the tracks in Batavia.  We lost power for a few days.  Three power poles were cracked off and hanging over the road just south of my property line.  Apparently there were 150 poles broken, but repair crews could only get half that number of poles.  There's still thousands w/o electric now, but the majority are back on.  One of my co-workers had a tree fall on her house, crashing thru the kitchen roof.  She needed staples in her scalp, but is very lucky she wasn't injured worse.  Her house will need lots of work.


Oh, remember and love that story about the ice car.  That stretch of Route 5 is well known for ice whenever there's a lake storm.  Basically the road runs right along the lake there, with Hoak's restaurant on a tiny bit of a point of land lakeside.  Locals know you steer clear of it under bad conditions.  But Hoak's has the best fish fry and a great view out over the lake (on a good day).

The house next door must have an awesome heating system. Reminds me of how one house gets blown down by hurricane winds and the next door house is left standing. 

That kind of ice is beyond my comprehension.

My DS grew up in south GA.  2 summers during college he and his fiance went to Minnesota to stay with her father.  He thought it was really nice and said he wouldn't mind living up there.  His first job is in DC area and he has had to learn how to deal with snow.  NNY and uppermidwest are a whole different category.

That was not a picture I took, but I've kayaked on the river and into the lake where the gator picture in my post above was taken.  It was gorgeous and amazing, but I kept being a little distracted with the thought, "don't fall in."  It's not unheard of for me to tip over/fall off my kayak, and of course that's what I kept thinking about.  Didn't help that I knew most of the big gators don't eat much if at all in the winter, it was still kinda freaky to see that large a gathering.  

That being said, I'd rather deal with gators than ice any day.

I'm in denial about the snow headed my way. Contractors are already pulling bulldozers into the complex at work so they can clear the parking lots. We've had zero snow all winter and now we are going to get slammed with enough to break out the heavy equipment for snow removal.

I just had to share that story on FB for my MIL.  She's constantly posting about the weather here in Michigan, like it's so horrible all the time, and sooo hard to deal with.  (We've currently got 1" of snow on the ground and no wind.  BFD.  I actually had unfollowed her for a while because of all her stupid weather reports.)
